Turn Back 10 (years)!

Lift your look. Lift your life. Lift your confidence.

You may be thinking about having a facelift but wonder… Am I too young? … or …Am I too old?

While most patients who have a facelift are between age 50 and 70, people should have the procedure when they and their facial cosmetic surgeon agree is the right time.

Dr. Robert J. Smyth, MD, leading facial cosmetic surgeon in Cincinnati, OH, specializing in just the face and neck areas for 30+ years, and who has performed more than 3,000 minimally-invasive facelifts (Timeless Lift™) has had the privilege of treating patients in their 40’s to their 80’s.

“What matters more than age is the patient’s need and their motivation for having the procedure,” says Dr. Smyth. “Think of the Timeless Lift™ as turning back the clock 10 years, which makes it an ideal procedure for most anyone.”

Dr. Smyth shares the following stories of real patients regarding the “Am I too young? or Am I too old?” question.

“My friend just had a facelift at 46 years old. That seems really young.”

There is no “right” age for having facial surgery; there are too many variables involved and each patient is different. While I would rarely if ever perform a facelift on anyone in their 30s, it’s not unusual for people to at least start thinking about facial surgery in their later 40s and to begin a regimen of dermal fillers and Botox injections. The majority of my facelift patients are between 50 and 70 years of age.

“My mother is in her late 70s and wants to have a facelift. Is she too old?”

Not necessarily. Provided they are in good general health and not on medications such as blood thinners, patients in their 70s and even their 80s can be ideal candidates for facial cosmetic surgery. If ever there is concern about a patient’s health, I demand medical clearance from their family doctor or internist before performing a surgical procedure. Remember too, I perform all procedures under strictly local anesthesia to avoid the risks associated with general anesthesia.

“I want to get my eyes done and have facial surgery before our daughter’s wedding. I’m 54 years old. Am I too young to have the procedures?”

You are at the prime age for having facial surgery and you’re doing it for all the right reasons. Weddings, reunions and other benchmarks in life are often the motivation that brings patients in for facial rejuvenation after years and years of thinking about it.

“A neighbor had a facelift years ago and now she’s having another one. Is that okay?”

Yes, you can have multiple facelifts in a lifetime. You might be surprised at how many people do. The minimally invasive Timeless Lift™ that I perform lasts six to 10 years on average depending on the patient’s lifestyle, genetics, sun exposure, nutrition, etc., after which it can be safely repeated. Remember, the aging process never stops, but facial surgery can do a beautiful job of turning back the clock again and again… and each time deliver the natural results and quick recovery patients want.
