How to Get Rid of Neck Fat and/or a Double Chin.

3 Options to Consider

A common complaint from patients, from their 30s to their 80s, is having a double chin and/or extra fat in their neck area. While being overweight can contribute to these problems, quite often the added fullness is genetic in nature and merely a trait that runs through runs in one’s family.

The good news is that patients have more options today than ever before for getting rid of neck fat and/or a double chin. Let’s look at the three most effective options and which might be best for you.

1. Submental Liposuction

Submental Liposuction is a quick, minimally invasive surgical procedure which a facial cosmetic surgeon, such as face and neck cosmetic surgeon/specialist Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati OH, performs to actually remove the extra fat cells under the skin. Dr. Smyth uses strictly local anesthesia to numb the area under the chin, then makes a small incision, and uses a tiny canula (tube) to remove the excess fat from the area.

Recovery: Submental liposuction causes little or no patient discomfort. Dr. Smyth asks his patients to take it easy and to wear a compression bandage (while at home, day and night) for the first 72 hours post procedure to minimize any bruising and to speed healing. The bandage is easy and comfortable to take on and off.

Results: Results from submental liposuction are immediate and typically last 10 to 20 years or longer and can even last a lifetime, provided patients do not have major fluctuations in their weight post-procedure.

Best Suited for patients of all ages and clearly the most effective remedy for older patients whose face and neck skin is less firm, loose and showing signs of sagging. These patients often see the very best results when having submental liposuction done in combination with a minimally-invasive lower facelift such as the Timeless Lift™ performed by Dr. Smyth.

2. Coolsculpting®

Coolsculpting is a non-surgical, fat-freezing technology that uses a machine to suction and reduce fat from under the chin.

Recovery: Per the Coolsculpting website, “following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, … or skin sensitivity. Sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental area treatment. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks.”

Results: Coolsculpting often requires several treatments spaced over a number of months in order to attain desired results, and touch-up treatments may need to be repeated within two to three years. Coolsculpting cannot remove excess, sagging skin from under the chin or the neck area.

Best Suited for patients in their 30s and 40s whose face and neck skin is still firm, more resilient and better able to rebound to the smoother look they desire after the fat freezing treatment.

3. Kybella®

Kybella is a series of injections of prescription medicine (deoxycholic acid) used to destroy fat cells under the chin and to gradaully improve the appearance and profile of patients with moderate to severe fat below the chin.

Recovery: Per the Kybella website, “common side effects of treatment include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. Potential more serious side effects can include nerve injury in the jaw, or trouble swallowing.”

Results: Kybella may require up to six treatments spaced at least one month apart to attain the results many patients want. Kybella cannot remove excess, sagging skin from under the chin or the neck area.

Best Suited for patients in their 30s and 40s whose face and neck skin is still firm, more resilient and better able to rebound to the smoother look they desire after treatment.

Which treatment is best for you?

“It depends on the patient’s age and resilience of their skin, as well as if they have other aging factors of the face and neck such as loose and sagging skin,” says Dr. Smyth. “Patients also need to consider their overall health, their budget, and how quickly they want to see results.”

WATCHOUT: Before having any non-surgical or surgical procedure, be sure to discuss with your physician your general health condition and share all medications you are taking currently. Specifically, be sure to discuss any medical conditions relating to your chin, neck area, swallowing, and any bleeding disorders.
