7 facts every man should know
A growing number of men age 40 and older, concerned about the bags and puffiness under their eyes or the loose and droopy skin in their upper lids, are looking into having “something done” to return their eyes to their natural, younger look.
Whatever might have held men back in the past –- whether worried they wouldn’t look the same after surgery, afraid of being called vain by friends and family, or simply concerned about the procedure itself –– men today are increasingly visiting facial cosmetic surgeons to get the facts about eyelid lifts and to see if they are a candidate for the procedure.
Here are 7 facts about eyelid lifts that every man should know.
FACT #1: Eyelid surgery is not painful.
Upper and/or lower eyelid surgery performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati OH is done under strictly local anesthesia to eliminate the risks and longer healing time associated with general anesthesia. Eyelid procedures are not painful. You are provided some light sedation and are kept entirely comfortable throughout the blepharoplasty which takes less than an hour. Many patients fall asleep during the procedure. Because of the light sedation, you will need someone to drive them to and from their procedure, but most patients are comfortable driving again at about 48 hours post-procedure.
FACT #2: The lower eyelid lift and upper eyelid lift are two separate procedures. They can be done individually or in combination.
Lower Eyelid Lift (eliminates/minimizes under eye bags and puffiness)
Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) may be recommended for removing the puffy bags under the eyes. In this procedure, the incision is artfully placed directly under the eye where it becomes invisible after healing. Dermal fillers specially designated for the thin and fragile skin in the under eye area also may be indicated for filling out the hollows and smoothing fine lines.
Upper Eyelid Lift (gets rid of saggy, drooping upper lids)
The typical upper eyelid surgery procedure (upper blepharoplasty) involves the surgeon artfully making a very skinny incision in the natural crease of the upper lid, removing extra skin and fat and closing the incision. Placing the incision in the natural crease ensures it is almost entirely invisible once healed. In some cases, Botox injections might also be suggested to lessen or eliminate squint lines between the brows and/or at the corners of the eyes.
FACT #3: You can go out in public at about 72 hours post-procedure, wearing sunglasses.
Eyelid lifts are among the fastest healing of all facial rejuvenation procedures. You will be asked to apply ice to the affected eye area for about 15-20 minutes, three times a day for the first two days post-procedure. The round eye gel packs you keep chilled in the freezer work well and can easily be found at your local pharmacy or online. Sutures dissolve on their own so there’s no worry about suture removal. Most patients are out and about within 3-4 days post-procedure donning sunglasses to protect against squinting. You should not touch, rub or pull on your eyes for two-three weeks post-procedure. TIP: If you wear prescription glasses or contacts, you might want to have a pair of prescription sunglasses to use during your healing period.
FACT #4: You may have some minimal bruising and/or swelling.
A bit of slight bruising and/or swelling around the eye area is not uncommon post-procedure. Full recovery (all bruising or swelling gone) can take up to 10 days to disappear. The skinny incision line mostly fades within a week post-op.
FACT #5: The approach to a man’s eyelift should be different vs. a woman’s.
A man’s eye area (eye and brow) is typically straighter across and with the brow lower than a woman’s eye area. To maintain a masculine look, it is important the surgeon not remove too much of the skin and fat in the upper lid which could feminize the eye. Ask your surgeon his or her approach to the male eye.
FACT #6: The goal should be an entirely natural, refreshed look. You, but younger.
Younger, refreshed looking eyes that turn back the clock without changing your natural eye shape should be the goal of an eyelid procedure –– NEVER a pulled or startled look in the upper lids and NEVER a hollowed-out look under the eyes. Be sure to discuss expectations with your surgeon in advance.
FACT #7: You play a role in getting and maintaining best results.
To ensure you get the most out of your eyelid surgery, protect your eyes from the sun by wearing quality sunglasses not just in the summer but year-round. A high-quality eye cream that moisturizes the tender skin around the eyes, encourages the production of collagen and elastin, and nourishes the eye area to retain resiliency and firmness is also important. There are a growing number of products made specifically for men. Check out “eye creams for men” online, or stop by Sephora, Ulta, or your favorite department store to see the shelves filled with excellent options. TIP: As with any facial rejuvenation procedure, healthy habits such as eating a good diet, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and not smoking are essential to keeping your eyes looking their best.
