There are those “quantity” of skin issues (saggy jowls, wrinkly neck, loose upper eyelids and bags under the eyes) that most of us face with the natural aging process. There are also “quality” of skin concerns (texture, tone, softness, fine lines and wrinkles, spots and discoloration) that can be caused not only by getting older but also by sun damage, smoking, acne scarring, poor diet, and genetics. Not to worry. Facial Laser Treatments, also known as laser skin resurfacing can help correct quality of skin issues and restore your facial skin to its softer, smoother, more evenly-toned, refreshed and younger-looking appearance.
How does Facial Laser treatment work?
As we age, our facial skin thickens on its own, and sun exposure, smoking, and poor nutrition worsen matters. Our skin cells fail to regenerate as quickly as they did when we were younger, causing the skin to lose its softness and its ability to reflect light for the youthful glow it once had. This is where laser resurfacing can work wonders. Dr. Smyth uses facial laser treatment to reduce and refresh the thickened layers of dead cells on the skin’s surface, while also penetrating down to the level where new cell production occurs. This process jumpstarts new cell production to create more collagen under the skin and new skin cells on the surface that result in greater skin elasticity, fullness and less wrinkling, and a softer, smoother look and feel.
Is treatment painful?
Today’s new generation of facial laser treatments produce not only remarkable results but are far more comfortable than those from the past. Dr. Smyth numbs the areas being treated with a topical cream followed by Lidocaine, which work together to alleviate any major discomfort. Most patients describe laser skin resurfacing not as painful but more like “quick, snapping pulsations” on their face. Worst case, you should feel only some sunburn-type heat on the skin surface as the laser does its work.
What is the recovery process?
You’ll need to apply a protective ointment to your face for 7-10 days post-procedure to protect the skin and allow it to heal. By about two weeks after treatment, most patients have only a pinkish tone still remaining at the treated areas and are ready to return to normal activities. Patients can apply base makeup again to the treated areas at this time. IMPORTANT: After laser skin treatment, protect your face with a sun block of SPF30 or higher year-round, and wear a wide-brimmed hat if out in the sun for any length of time.
How to know if you are a candidate
Most women and men, unless they have a chronic skin condition, can benefit from facial laser treatment provided their facial cosmetic surgeon recommends the procedure. That being said, patients with Mediterranean skin tone or darker may experience uneven pigmentation afterward and as such, may not be good candidates. Be sure to have a personal consultation with an experienced facial cosmetic surgeon to see if laser skin resurfacing is right for you. Ask to see before and after photos of the surgeon’s actual facial laser patients, and ask to speak to some patients to hear their experiences firsthand.
