Your non-surgical fight against facial lines and wrinkles

4 face fillers you need to know about

Face Fillers Cincinnati, OHNot yet ready for a facelift? Not sure cosmetic surgery is something you want to do? But, you’re not at all happy with the lines, wrinkles and folds you see in your face. You may be an ideal candidate for today’s safe and effective, non-surgical dermal fillers, also known as injectables.

In the hands of an experienced facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist, these office-administered treatments can do a remarkable job of temporarily softening or removing moderate to severe facial lines, wrinkles and folds. They deliver superb and immediate results whether used alone or in combination with a facelift. They can last for months to more than a year, and can be repeated as needed.

Here are 4 dermal fillers you need to know about (as well as their typical results and pricing).

(1) Botox® (injectable)
Botox is the brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox has become the gold standard among cosmetic surgeons for temporarily smoothing facial wrinkles, especially the vertical lines between the eyebrows (the “11’s”), creases at the corners of the eyes (squint lines), and horizontal wrinkles in the forehead. FDA approved.
Results: Typically 3 to 6 months
Cost: Usually priced by the “unit”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per unit. Example: The area between the brows may require 10 units of Botox at your initial treatment.

(2) Juvederm®
Juvederm is a dermal gel containing a modified hyaluronic acid identical to a naturally occurring building block found in the human body. Dr. Robert J. Smyth and other cosmetic surgeons use this face filler to smooth away lines in the nasolabial folds (along the sides of the nose and mouth), in the cheeks and chin areas, delivering natural results. FDA approved.
Results: Typically up to one year or longer
Cost: Usually priced by the “syringe”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per syringe. Example: The nasolabial area may require two syringes at initial treatment.

(3) Voluma®
This member of the Juvederm family of fillers is the first and only FDA-approved dermal filler designed specifically to correct volume loss in the cheek area. This injectable gel subtly returns the cheeks to the fuller, natural look of your younger years.
Results: Can last up to two years
Cost: Usually priced by the “syringe”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per syringe. Example: The cheeks may require two syringes at initial treatment.

(4) Restylane®
Dr. Robert J. Smyth prefers this dermal filler for the delicate area under the eyes, as it allows him to fill sunken areas and add volume subtly and gently for natural results that leave the face and eyes looking refreshed and more youthful. FDA approved.
Results: Can last up to 18 months
Cost: Usually priced by the “syringe”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per syringe. Example: The area under your eyes may require two syringes at initial treatment.

Watch-outs:

  • Tell your facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist about any allergies or medical conditions you have, any muscle or nerve conditions you have or have been treated for in the past, and all medications you currently take.
  • Discuss your expectations with the surgeon or facial cosmetic specialist. There is a definite art to treatment. Choose someone who is highly experienced. Also, it is always a good idea to start conservatively –- and add more later, if needed.
  • Be cautious about savings programs. While everyone likes to get a “deal”, beware of “packages”, “parties” and pricing offers that require you to have more dermal fillers than you actually need in order to get a savings. An overdone face is not worth the money saved.

How to Get the Most Out of Talking with a Facial Cosmetic Surgeon

7 questions every woman should ask

Facial Cosmetic Surgeon Cincinnati, OHYou’re ready to talk to a facial cosmetic surgeon about how getting older is changing how you look. Whether it’s to address those first signs of lines and wrinkles, or to discuss more severe loose and sagging skin in your face and neck, heavy/droopy eyelids, or sun-damaged skin, you’re ready to learn more about your options to look better and feel better about yourself.

Before you go for your consultation (which, by the way, we feel should be complimentary), take time to organize your thoughts and have your questions ready.

We suggest you talk to several different cosmetic surgeons and ask each of them these seven questions.

(1) How do you determine what is best for me?
An experienced facial cosmetic surgeon will look at you as the unique individual you are. Every person’s face, skin condition, facial symmetry, overall health and lifestyle are different; there’s no one solution that suits everyone. Whatever procedure the surgeon might recommend should be highly personalized to you.

(2) What is your philosophy for improving a woman’s face as she ages?
If you are the type of woman who’s looking for a refreshed, improved “younger-you” appearance, and the surgeon is talking about glamour and Hollywood-style makeovers, you may be in the wrong place. Discuss in detail your idea of beauty and what you find attractive. Go with your gut to find the doctor who’s on the same page with you. You’ll know it when you’re talking to the right surgeon.

(3) How long will I need to take off from work and physical activities after facial cosmetic surgery?
Get specific here. Tell the surgeon exactly what your work, family and other demands are in life so that your procedure can be scheduled to prevent any surprises or disappointment. Demand the surgeon and his or her staff be honest about healing times. Set realistic expectations for yourself. In other words, don’t wait until the last minute –– before a wedding, college reunion, start of a new job, etc. –– to have a surgical procedure. Even though today’s minimally invasive procedures are much faster to heal than in the past, you still need to allow adequate time for recovery and best results.

(4) Will people know I had surgery?
The goal of most women who have had a facial cosmetic procedure is for friends and family to wonder why they look so good, but without knowing for sure they’ve had any “work done”. At Dr. Robert J. Smyth’s office, we tell women who schedule the minimally invasive Timeless Lift™ (lifts and removes excess, sagging skin in the lower face and neck) to give themselves a good week to 10 days to recover. Sutures are removed at eight days post-procedure after which you can pull down a few pieces of hair to hide the very thin incision line in front of the ear. Once the sutures have healed over (at about two weeks post-procedure), you can dot the skinny incision line with makeup to hide the pinkish color which gradually fades away.

(5) How long will the results last?
As the patient, you have a definite role in how long your results last. For the minimally invasive Timeless Lift, results will typically last six to 10 years if you protect your skin from sun abuse, stop smoking, eat a nutritious diet, maintain a fairly consistent weight, and live a healthy lifestyle. Results for laser resurfacing, which is performed to improve the quality of sun-damaged and finely-lined skin, will usually last six to 10 years. Results from an upper or lower eyelid lift can last 10 years or longer.

(6) What kind of anesthesia do you use?
Choice of anesthesia will vary by the surgeon. Dr. Smyth performs all facial cosmetic surgical procedures –– the Timeless Lift, upper and lower eyelid lifts, laser facial resurfacing, brow lifts, and chin implants –– with the patient having only local anesthesia during the procedure combined with some relaxation medicine pre-procedure. Patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout the procedure and are spared the longer recovery, costs and risks associated with general anesthesia. Other surgeons may still use general anesthesia. Ask the surgeon his or her preference and “why” they choose that method.

(7) Can I see photos of “your” work and/or talk to prior patients?
You have every right to want to see the surgeon’s own artistry – not just photos of models. However, remember that the choice to have cosmetic surgery is typically a very personal and private decision. Understandably, the majority of patients do not want their before and after photos shared, especially via the surgeon’s website or social media. That being said, some patients are very happy to share their experience with you by a phone call or email.

Male Facial Plastic Surgery

6 questions every man should ask his surgeon

Male Plastic Surgery CincinnatiMale or female, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look our best. And in today’s world, where many of us are continuing to work, participate in athletics, and live physically active and demanding lives well into our 70s and beyond, our “looks” matter more than ever before. Hence, the increasing numbers of both men and women having surgical facial cosmetic procedures and non-surgical treatments.

The reasons why men versus women pursue facial plastic surgery vary only slightly. Both genders want to look better and younger. Men however often express other reasons, such as “I work with a lot of younger guys and want to stay competitive in my field,” or “I need to be at the top of my game and I’m not feeling it right now,” or “I’m not vain, but I feel like my aging face means I’m not a player anymore, socially or in business; I want to be at the top of my game again.”

Our message to men… don’t let anyone stop you from looking your best or regaining the confidence you’ve lost because of getting older. And don’t worry about vanity –– it’s as masculine to take care of your face as it is to exercise and take care of your body. So, if you’re thinking about male facial plastic surgery, take the initiative and learn what’s available. But, be sure to do your due diligence before making any decision.

Talk to several plastic surgeons and ask each of them these six questions. Dr. Robert J. Smyth, cosmetic surgeon in Cincinnati OH, specializing in just the face and neck, shares his answers here.

(1) How do you determine what is best for me?
“An in-person consultation is essential to determine what’s bothering the patient about his face and neck, and to discuss the various options of what can be done to reverse the signs of aging. Every person’s face, skin condition, overall health and lifestyle are different; there’s no one solution that suits everyone.”

(2) What is your approach to performing facial plastic surgery on men versus women?
“There is a distinct difference in surgical technique to ensure the masculine look men wish to retain. When performing an upper eyelid lift on a man, my goal is NOT to provide a platform for eye makeup as is the focus for women’s upper eyelid surgery but, instead, to remove enough sagging skin to make the eyes look younger without feminizing them. If performing a facelift on a man, I carefully place the very skinny incision line such that it does NOT interfere with the natural hair growth of the beard and sideburns. These and other surgical refinements provide the masculine results that men want.”

(3) How long will I need to take off from work or sports after facial cosmetic surgery?
“You can continue with mild, day-to-day activities within 48 hours post-procedure, but most patients prefer to wait until I remove their small line of sutures at eight days post-procedure before going out in public. I encourage patients to wait at least two weeks post-procedure before engaging in heavy lifting, running, or playing sports.”

(4) Will people know I had surgery?
“You will have a very thin incision line in front of the ear and tucked into the crease directly behind the ear. Even after sutures are removed at eight days post-op, the incision line will be a pinkish color that gradually fades each day until it becomes so faint that no one notices it. Full healing can take several weeks. However, once the sutures have healed over (at about 10-12 days post-procedure), patients can dot the incision line with a skin-colored makeup pencil to hide the incision line. These are easy enough to find, even for male patients, at your local pharmacy.”

(5) How long will the results last?
“An upper eyelid lift can last for decades. Results for the minimally invasive Timeless Lift (removes excess, saggy skin at the lower face, jawline and neck) will typically last six to 10 years depending on the patient protecting his skin from sun abuse, not smoking, eating a nutritious diet, maintaining a fairly consistent weight, and living a healthy lifestyle. Results for laser resurfacing, which is performed to improve the quality of sun-damaged and finely-lined skin, will usually last six to 10 years, again depending on how well the patient takes good care of his skin.”

(6) Is facial cosmetic surgery painful?
“I perform all facial cosmetic surgical procedures –– the Timeless Lift, upper and lower eyelid lifts, laser facial resurfacing, brow lifts, and chin implants –– with the patient having only local anesthesia during the procedure combined with some relaxation medicine pre-procedure. My patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout the procedure and are spared the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia. All surgical procedures are performed at the Outpatient Treatment Center at the convenient and easy-to-access TriHealth Evendale Hospital in suburban Cincinnati, where patients have the care and attention of the facility’s outstanding staff.

The Beauty of An Upper Eyelid Lift

Are you a good candidate?

Upper Eyelid Surgery Cincinnati, OHUpper eyelid surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty) is one of the top five facial cosmetic procedures performed each year. Why? Because it works.

Once we have loose, saggy skin in our upper lids, there’s no magic cream, lotion or potion that will make our eyes look young again. The only real solution to getting rid of the excess skin that can leave our eyes looking tired, heavy and lifeless is an upper eyelid lift.

How do you know if you are a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery?

  1. Your Age. Unlike facial aging where loose, excess skin in the jowls and neck typically doesn’t become a problem until after age 50, saggy upper eyelids can be an issue for people as young as their late 30s and 40s, most often due to heredity factors. As such, age isn’t always a factor in determining if you can benefit from an eyelid lift.
  2. Feedback from Others. Do people keep asking you what’s wrong, or say you look tired or worse yet, ask if you are angry about something when in reality all is well? It could be that your heavy lids are not only causing you to look as if you’re sleep deprived but perhaps even unhappy, depressed or out of sorts. Droopy upper eyelids can convey a mood and facial countenance other than what you desire.
  3. Your Eyelid Skin Has Lost Its Resilience. Can you pull out gently on your upper eyelid skin and it stays somewhat pulled out until you press it back down again? This is the excess skin that face and neck cosmetic surgeon/specialist, Dr. Robert J. Smyth, conservatively and artfully removes to leave your eyes looking natural and like you, only younger and more bright-eyed.
  4. Applying Eye Makeup is Becoming a Challenge. Lined and wrinkled upper eyelids make it difficult to get the smooth, even coverage you want when using eyeliner and eyeshadows. Applying an eye makeup primer can help, but only to a certain extent.
  5. You Can Take 4-5 Days Off Work. “The very thin incision made for upper eyelid surgery is carefully placed in the natural crease of the upper lid so as to be invisible once healed,” says Dr. Smyth. “Patients typically will have a little redness for up to a week after their procedure, but most put on sunglasses and are out and about within 48 hours post-procedure and go back to work and all but the most strenuous of activities at about 4-5 days after their eyelid lift.”

Important to note is that eyelid sutures dissolve on their own, so there is no need for suture removal. Also, Dr. Smyth performs all upper eyelid surgery with the patient having only local anesthesia and a small amount of relaxation medication. Patients are entirely comfortable during the procedure and are spared the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia.

To learn more about the beautiful results you can expect from today’s minimally invasive upper eyelid lift, or to schedule your private, one-on-one complimentary consultation with Dr. Robert J. Smyth, call 513.201.8490. It would be our pleasure to meet you and discuss how we can help you look your very best.

Cosmetic Surgery. Botox. Dermal Fillers.

What do you need for the results you want?

Cosmetic Surgery Cincinnati, OHAfter a certain age, most of us have stood in front of the mirror at one time or another, looking at our face and wondering, “Can they just tighten things a little here or there?” … or “What if I had some Botox between my eyes?”… or “Maybe some fillers around my mouth is all I need.”… and “Look at what happens when I pull up the skin just a bit along my jawline and neck!”

You know how you’d like to look. What you don’t know is how to get the results you want safely, cost effectively, and without the dreaded fear of overdoing it when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

Stop waiting and wondering. Instead, get busy on finding out what you need to do for the results you desire.

Get informed. Do your research and read up on today’s leading, minimally-invasive facial cosmetic surgery procedures (such as the Timeless Lift), as well as Botox, dermal fillers (injectables), and other newer-to-the-market treatments such as CoolSculpting and Kybella. Review not just women’s magazines but also reputable health and beauty websites as well as those of the pharmaceutical companies that make Botox and fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Voluma. Prepare a list of questions and visit several cosmetic surgeons to gather and compare their answers. Look at the expertise of the surgeon, how many facial cosmetic procedures he or she has performed, length of recovery of the suggested procedure, cost of treatment, how long results typically last, and detailed expectations for the healing period.

Be a tough consumer. Don’t agree to having any kind of surgical or non-surgical facial cosmetic procedure just because it’s new, everyone is talking about it, or it’s advertised all over TV. Same goes for a pushy surgeon or staff. If you’re feeling pressured, step away and rethink things before you decide to proceed.

Understand what does what. Cosmetic surgery, Botox and Dermal Fillers can deliver outstanding results whether performed individually or in combination. Each has their own purpose and specific area(s) of the face and neck they address in helping to turn back the clock on aging.

  • Cosmetic surgery is the only solution for removing excess, loose, sagging skin at the lower face, jawline and in the neck area. For example, the minimally-invasive Timeless Lift is today’s most proven facelift/neck lift for lifting and removing extra, drooping skin in the jowls and neck area to provide the natural, fresher, more youthful appearance most people desire. The procedure performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati is done under strictly local anesthesia, along with some mild relaxation medication. Patients are entirely comfortable throughout the 1-1/2 hour procedure and are spared the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia. Results typically last 6-10 years, after which the Timeless Lift can be repeated, if desired. What’s the cost? If the lift lasts you 10 years, you will have invested less than $2/per day in having the natural, “younger-you” appearance you want.
  • Botox is used to soften fine lines starting to form around the eyes, and to erase frown lines between the brows (“11s”). Botox injections typically last three to six months.
  • Dermal Fillers (aka injectables) are a highly-effective way to fill creases, fine lines and wrinkles that occur as we age and our skin’s collagen production slows. Among today’s most popular fillers are Juvederm (often used in the nasolabial folds and around the mouth), Restylane (specially formulated for the more fragile skin in the under eye area), and Voluma (designed to restore volume in the cheek area). Fillers cannot remove excess skin. Results of most dermal fillers will last up to nine months. The time varies by the individual, sun exposure, smoking, healthy diet, stress, and lifestyle.

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting

3 factors you’ll want to consider

Liposuction vs Coolsculpting Cincinnati, OHSubmental Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting. Which is the preferred treatment for eliminating the extra fat (double chin) that many of us see when we look in the mirror?

Submental Liposuction is a quick, minimally invasive surgical procedure in which cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert J. Smyth uses strictly local anesthesia to numb the area under the chin, then make a small incision, and use a tiny canula to actually remove the excess fat from that area. CoolSculpting is non-surgical, fat-freezing technology that uses a machine to suction and reduce fat from under the chin.

Which is the better treatment? “It depends on the patient’s age and resilience of their skin, as well as if they have other aging factors of the face and neck such as loose and sagging skin, their budget, and how quickly they want to see results, “ says Dr. Smyth.

What is your age?

Patients in their 30s and 40s whose face and neck skin is still firm and more resilient are typically good candidates for CoolSculpting. This is because their skin is better able to rebound to the smooth look they desire after the fat-freezing treatment.

For patients who are older and have natural signs of aging, such as loose and sagging in their lower face, neck and chin area will typically see best results with submental liposuction, perhaps done in combination with a minimally invasive lower facelift. This combined procedure will allow for removal and smoothing of the loose skin. CoolSculpting cannot remove extra skin.

Which treatment fits your budget?

Submental liposuction typically lasts 10 to 20 years or longer and can even last a lifetime. CoolSculpting on the other hand often requires more than one treatment in order to attain desired results, and future touch-up treatments may be required. Be sure to factor in the cost of additional treatments when deciding on CoolSculpting vs. liposuction.

How quickly do you want to see results?

Liposuction delivers immediate results that can last decades, provided the patient maintains a fairly steady weight over that period of time. CoolSculpting results can take weeks to months to appear.

Cosmetic Surgery On Your Mind?

5 feelings you should expect to have

Cosmetic Surgery Cincinnati, OHIn the words of one patient, “It’s not like buying new shoes; it’s your face. It’s a big decision.” She went on to say, “But now that I’ve had the lift and my eyes done, I’d do it again and, in fact, I wish I’d done it years ago.”

We hear these kinds of comments often. Facial cosmetic surgery is not something most people decide to do on the spur of the moment; many patients think about it for years. Women especially can talk themselves into and out of “having something done” time and time again. Consider yourself perfectly normal if you feel some or all of the following feelings.

5 feelings you can expect when considering cosmetic surgery

1) Expect to feel vain at even the thought of having cosmetic surgery.
Heaven forbid that we would do something for ourselves. We put everything and everyone else first in life –– kids, spouse, work, neighborhood, school and social obligations, volunteering, you name it. Then one day we get to the point where we say, “It’s my turn”. It’s not vain to want to be at your best and if cosmetic procedures help you get there, we say no excuses are needed to take next steps to facial rejuvenation.

2) Expect to feel anxious and nervous in advance.
This is entirely normal. Most everyone experiences anxiety to some degree when having any type of medical procedure performed. Just know that you will be entirely relaxed and feel no discomfort during your cosmetic procedure. And because leading cosmetic surgeons and face and neck specialists, such as Dr. Robert J. Smyth, use strictly local anesthesia, there’s no need to worry about the risks and longer recovery associated with general anesthesia.

3) Expect to worry about how you will look afterward.
Of course, you’ll worry about the results. We’ve all seen photos of Hollywood stars whose unending cosmetic procedures make them look strange and not at all like themselves. Not to worry. Before selecting a cosmetic surgeon to perform any type of cosmetic procedure or treatment on you, make sure the two of you agree as to what constitutes “natural looking” results. Ask questions. Look at photos of the surgeon’s actual patients (not models). Ask to talk to some of his or her patients. Go with your gut. If things don’t feel right or you feel rushed or you’re just not comfortable with moving ahead, take the time to visit other cosmetic surgeons and reassess your options.

4) Expect to care what family and friends will think if they learn you “had work done”.
It’s a bit crazy that as adults we still seek the approval of family and friends when making certain decisions, but we do. One patient got over her hesitation when she finally came to the conclusion that, “It’s my life and I don’t need permission to do what makes me happy.”

5) Expect to feel excited about the thought of looking in the mirror and liking what you see, feeling confident again in your looks, wanting to go out and enjoy life like you once did, and being an overall happier person.
This is the best feeling of all, and we hear it expressed in wonderful ways by our patients. Here are just a few examples of how patients feel after their cosmetic procedure:

“I can’t believe how much better I feel about myself since my cosmetic surgery procedure.”

“I lost my husband a few years ago and I’m finally ready to get back out and enjoy life again; thanks for giving me back the confidence to do so.”

“A guy can start to feel less competitive in the workplace as you get older, especially when many of your coworkers are a decade or more younger. With the lift and my eyes done, I feel back in the game.”

“I am so glad I had the Timeless Lift done before our daughter’s wedding. I love how I look in the photos and they’ll be around for generations!”

“People keep asking me why I look so good. I just tell them I’m exercising, eating healthy, and taking better care of myself. I also changed my hairstyle. My friends are so confused and I’m loving it!”

“I honestly feel like I just restarted my life!”

Bottom line, whatever you may be feeling, your feelings are justified. At Dr. Smyth’s office, we gladly take the time to listen to, understand and discuss your concerns, and to answer all of your questions.

We believe the goal should always be to talk about what’s bothering you and how we can help provide the refreshed, natural “younger you” look you want; not to talk you into something you don’t need.

To learn more about today’s exciting, minimally invasive cosmetic surgery options for turning back the clock, or to schedule your private, one-on-one complimentary consultation with Dr. Robert J. Smyth, call 513.201.8490. We’d love to meet you.

Considering A Face Surgery Procedure?

Who’s having what done and why.

Face Surgery Cincinnati, OHIf you believe you have every right to look as good as you can whatever your age, you share the thinking of thousands of other women and men who have had or are considering a facial cosmetic procedure.

Contrary to popular opinion, sheer vanity is not the only or main motivation behind someone taking the step to have face surgery. Not feeling good about one’s self and the resulting loss of self-confidence can be as much an impetus as looking in the mirror and seeing the lines and wrinkles that come with growing older.

In the words of one patient who recently had the lower facelift/neck lift (Timeless Lift™) performed by face and neck cosmetic surgeon/specialist, Dr. Robert J. Smyth, “I was tired of how my aging face and neck were changing my outlook on life and how the way I interacted with people which, in turn, affected how people responded to me. I was becoming more and more reclusive and just not the person I used to be. Since the face surgery, I feel like me again.”

“We hear this kind of reaction often and it’s very rewarding to know we can make such a difference, but it’s not to say that face surgery is life changing for everyone,” says Dr. Smyth. “As a surgeon, it is my responsibility to discuss expectations with every patient and to make sure the patient is a good candidate for surgery, both aesthetically and emotionally. What I can say is that the goal is always a natural result, which in my opinion means patients look like a younger version of themselves. The fact that looking younger can have such a positive impact on their happiness and self-confidence is the icing on the cake.”

Whatever the reason you may be considering face surgery –– whether facial aesthetics, turning back the clock on aging, self-confidence, or a combination thereof –– if your reason matters to you, it’s reason enough to explore your options and to learn more. In the process, be sure to look for a dedicated face and neck cosmetic surgeon/specialist and to discuss expectations.

What to do about an aging neck

Cosmetic neck surgery – your best options

Cosmetic Neck Surgery Cincinnati, OH“I hate all of this loose skin in my neck.”
“My grandkids tell me I have a “turkey neck”.
“My neck looks old and the skin is wrinkly like crepe paper.”

What happened to that smoother, firmer neck you had in your younger years? Unfortunately, the neck ages as much and sometimes even more so than the face. For some people, their neck gets heavier and thicker whether from weight gain or genetics –- fuller necks and a double chin run in their family. Others are unhappy with the loose, draping skin of their neck –- typically a matter of the skin losing its elasticity as part of the natural aging process. Still others are displeased with the texture of their neck skin –– often the result of years of sun damage, smoking or poor diet, as can be the case with facial skin, as well.

Cosmetic neck surgery can improve a thick, sagging or wrinkled neck to help us look years younger, help restore self-confidence in our appearance, allow us to wear the necklines we prefer as women, and enable men to more comfortably wear shirts and ties. Here are some options for cosmetic neck surgery.

Neck Liposuction (submental liposuction)

Liposuction is a fairly simple and quick procedure used to remove excess fat under the chin. It can be an ideal procedure for people who are at a healthy weight but still have an excessively full neck or double chin. While liposuction cannot greatly improve loose, sagging skin, it can help to achieve a more defined jawline and more refined looking neck. As such, it is most often performed on younger patients who still have good tone and elasticity to their skin.

Dr. Smyth performs neck liposuction using local anesthesia allowing the patient to be entirely comfortable and without having the risks and slower recovery associated with general anesthesia. Dr. Smyth makes a tiny incision concealed beneath the chin through which he inserts a small cannula to remove excess fat and artfully contour a natural chin to neck jawline. Patients may have some minor bruising or swelling post-procedure, but most return to work within 48 hours and full activities within one week. Results of neck liposuction are permanent provided the patient does not have major weight gain or loss.

Neck Lift Surgery

If you are unhappy about loose, sagging and wrinkly skin on your neck, a neck lift procedure may be your best option. The neck lift gets rid of the “turkey neck” look and leaves the neck looking smoother, firmer and younger.

For optimal results, Dr. Smyth performs the neck lift as part of the lower facelift procedure (Timeless Lift™), thereby improving the cheek area, neck area and redefining the jawline all in one treatment for the complete and natural results that most patients want. The procedure also includes tightening of loose neck muscles/vertical neckbands (platysmaplasty), again for natural results accomplished in one procedure, one cost and one healing period.

Dr. Smyth performs the neck lift (Timeless Lift™) using local anesthesia along with light sedation. Patients are comfortable throughout the procedure and have none of the risks or slower recovery associated with general anesthesia. Dr. Smyth makes a very thin incision in front of and behind each ear, artfully placing the incision in natural creases so as to be hidden once healed. Through these incisions, he tightens underlying muscle and tissue, removes excess skin, redrapes the skin, and meticulously closes the skin with small stitches. Stitches are removed eight days post-procedure.

Minor bruising and/or swelling in front of and below the ears is to be expected along with a feeling of some tightness in the lower face and in the neck for a few weeks post-procedure. These effects cause little or no major discomfort and gradually subside over time. Most people return to work within 10 days after their surgery and to full activities within two to three weeks. Results of the Timeless Lift™ lower facelift and neck lift typically last six to 10 years depending on the patient’s lifestyle. Longest lasting results are among patients who stop smoking, protect their skin from the sun, follow a healthy diet, and get adequate rest.

The Timeless Lift provides a smoother, firmer face and neck for the entirely natural-looking, “younger-you” results most patients prefer. It’s “just the lift” the majority of people need to help turn back the clock on aging.

WATCHOUT: Make sure to discuss expectations with your face and neck cosmetic surgeon/specialist. While a facelift/neck lift can improve the face and neck area, it cannot significantly improve the neck and chest area below the collarbone.

Getting rid of eyelid bags

Non-surgical and surgical solutions

Eyelid Bags Cincinnati, OHUnder-eye bags and puffiness are a common problem for both women and men. This pesky problem can start as young as when you’re in your 20s and continue into your senior years when the puffiness can become saggy skin under the eyes.

Eyelid bags can be inherited or caused by lifestyle and dietary choices. Either way, they can affect not only our appearance but also our self-confidence. There are non-surgical and surgical solutions for minimizing or getting rid of your under-eye bags. Let’s take a look.

7 non-surgical solutions for treating eyelid bags

  • Manage your allergies. Seasonal and other allergies can cause puffy, watery eyes. Taking allergy medicine can relieve your under-eye puffiness as well as your runny nose or stuffiness.
  • Limit salt intake. Too much salt can cause puffiness over your entire body including under your eyes.
  • Check your sleeping position. Fluids will more easily gravitate to under your eyes if you are a stomach or side sleeper. Try sleeping on your back and using an extra pillow to keep your head in a comfortable but more upright position.
  • Don’t overdo alcohol consumption. Alcohol is dehydrating which means it pulls the water out of your body, including under your eyes where the result can be pouches and eyelid bags.
  • Protect your eyes from the sun. Excessive sun exposure causes wrinkling and creasing of the skin, including the delicate skin under your eyes. Wear sunscreen special made for around the eyes and invest in a good pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection.
  • Eat a healthy diet, and get enough sleep. Easier said than done, but a diet rich in fruits and green/yellow vegetables, lean protein (fish and chicken), yogurt and other healthy sources of calcium… and low in saturated fat, carbs and salt will make your skin look and feel healthier, including the skin under your eyes. And, there’s nothing like routinely getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night for brighter-looking eyes and minimizing under-eye puffiness.
  • Stop smoking. Nicotine can dry out your skin and cause wrinkly, droopy, saggy under-eye pouches

3 surgical solutions for treating eyelid bags

  • Restylane®-type fillers. When expertly injected by a facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist such as Dr. Robert J. Smyth, these fillers specially developed for the delicate under-eye skin, will fill in the valley (tear trough) below the lower eyelids to help alleviate the illusion of under-eye bags.
  • Laser resurfacing. Dr. Smyth uses the CO2 Fractional Laser to smooth fine lines and crepe paper-like skin under the eyes.
  • Lower eyelid lift (blepharoplasty). This surgical procedure is used by Dr. Smyth to remove excess fatty tissue which produces the look of under-eye bags, and to tighten/smooth the skin under the eyes. Results will typically last up to 10 years or longer, based on proper protection of the under-eye skin (sunscreen, sunglasses). Dr. Smyth performs the procedure under strictly local anesthesia. Patients are entirely comfortable during the procedure and are spared the longer recovery and side effects associated with general anesthesia.
