How to Get the Natural Look You Want from a Facelift

It Starts with the Surgeon You Select

Face Lift Cincinnati, OHFor anyone contemplating a facelift, nothing is more frightening than the thought of winding up with the stretched, pulled, windswept look that’s reminiscent of years past or the botched jobs you sometimes see on TV.

According to Dr. Robert Smyth, who specializes strictly in rejuvenation of just the face and neck and has performed thousands of facelifts in Cincinnati for patients coming from within a 100-mile radius, “The only result I believe to be acceptable in today’s world is a natural look that leaves you looking like yourself but younger, refreshed and with the smoother face and neck skin and more defined jawline of your younger years.”

“I don’t believe in ‘overdone’, whether it’s a facelift, fillers or Botox. The goal is to have family and friends wondering why you look so good, but not really sure why.”

Dr. Smyth performs the leading minimally-invasive facelift known as the Timeless Lift™. Its proven, natural results have made it the procedure of choice for people from their 40s into their 80s. Having performed more than 3,000 minimally-invasive facelifts on both women and men, Dr. Smyth has seen most every type of face and aging issue. His mantra: Experience matters, especially when it’s your face.

“Besides the natural results I can achieve with the Timeless Lift, I am able to perform the procedure with the patient having only local anesthesia, along with just a small amount of relaxation medication,” adds Dr. Smyth. “That means my patients have none of the risks of general anesthesia and they enjoy a shorter recovery. My patients are always kept comfortable during surgery. Many sleep through the procedure.”

Looking better is not the only result of having a facelift. Patients are happier, with their confidence lifted along with their face. Patients often feel they have a new lease on life and are re-energized to get out and do things again with family and friends. Most patients return to work and full activities within two-to-three weeks post-procedure, so downtime is minimal.

If you’re thinking about a facelift, take time to talk to your surgeon about his or her philosophy regarding the natural, refreshed and “younger-you” look you deserve.
We’d love to tell you more about Dr. Robert J. Smyth and the natural-looking facelifts he performs at the TriHealth surgical center in Cincinnati OH.

What to Discuss with Your Facial Cosmetic Surgeon

6 common concerns to cover pre-procedure

Facial Cosmetic Surgeon Cincinnati, OHMaking an appointment for a consultation with a facial cosmetic surgeon can be a big step. Most people mull over, sometimes for years, all of the reasons why they shouldn’t proceed.
“I have no business spending money on myself this way.” “People will think I’m being vain.” “I’m probably too old.” “What if I’m unhappy with the results?” “Will people know I had something done?” “I probably can’t take off work long enough for the procedure and time to heal.”

Dr. Robert J. Smyth, Facial Cosmetic Surgeon in Cincinnati OH, specializing in just the face and neck for over 30 years, addresses these six common concerns.

#1 “I have no business spending money on myself this way.”

Affordability is subjective, but here are the numbers regarding your return on investment for three of the most popular surgical procedures Dr. Smyth performs.
Timeless Lift™ (minimally-invasive lower face lift that removes loose, sagging skin from the lower face and neck and creates the smoother jawline and cheeks of your natural younger face). Lasts six to 10 years depending on the person, their lifestyle, healthy eating, not smoking, and use of sunscreen. If the Timeless Lift lasts 10 years, it will have cost you about $2.00 a day.
Upper or Lower Lids (removes loose, drooping skin from the upper lids and bags from under the eyes. Can last 10 to 20 years or longer. If your upper or lower lids procedure lasts 15 years, it will have cost you approximately six cents a day.
Laser Skin Resurfacing (CO2 laser skin resurfacing improves the quality of facial skin for patients with deeper lines and wrinkles, rough texture, uneven pigmentation, and spots and scars caused by sun damage, stress and lifestyle). Can last 20 years or longer if you take good care of your skin and protect it from sun, wind and other elements. If the laser treatment lasts you 20 years, it will have cost you less than five cents a day.

#2 “People will think I’m being vain.”

Oftentimes, the people who are most critical of your decision to have a facial cosmetic procedure are those who wish they were doing it themselves. As one of our patients so aptly expressed, “It’s my life; I’m going to live it the way I want and if plastic surgery makes me happy, that’s for me to decide.”

#3 “I’m probably too old.”

Age is typically not a factor in having plastic surgery procedures. For example, Dr. Smyth performs all surgical procedures with the patient having local anesthesia only, along with a mild relaxant, thereby eliminating the risks and longer healing time associated with general anesthesia. Patients are kept comfortable throughout their procedure; many will fall asleep. As long as you are generally healthy and can stop taking (for two weeks prior to your procedure) aspirin, aspirin-related products or other medications, vitamins and supplements that have blood thinning properties, you will likely be a candidate for facial cosmetic surgery. Also, smokers need to quit or significantly reduce smoking for two weeks prior to their procedure. Dr. Smyth gets a medical history on each patient in advance of scheduling a procedure and medical clearance, if necessary, from the patient’s general practitioner or internist.

#4 “What if I’m unhappy with the results?”

Because results are highly subjective, you should freely discuss with your facial cosmetic surgeon during the initial consultation what’s bothering you about your face, your expectations for the change you’d like to see, and your commitment to follow the surgeon’s post-op instructions for optimal healing and results. Likewise, the surgeon should honestly share what he or she feels they can do to help you attain your goals. They should set realistic expectations for results, healing time and fully discuss the procedure, how it’s performed, and your step-by-step post-procedure care at home. Open dialogue and realistic expectations, coupled with the surgeon’s experience and skills, are the best way to attain the results you desire.

#5 “Will people know I had something done?”

This is always an interesting question, because while most patients don’t want anyone to know they had cosmetic surgery, they also want people to notice they look better. The goal for Dr. Smyth is to provide a natural “younger you” look –– never a stark or startled look. As such, people should wonder why you look so good, refreshed and better. They may suspect you had something done but not know for sure.

#6 “I probably can’t take off work long enough for the procedure and time to heal.”

With a little planning, most people can fit the time needed for their procedure and healing time into their work and social schedule. Here’s a quick look at what to expect.
Timeless Lift™
Dressing change 24 hours after your procedure. Sutures removed eight days post-procedure.
Potential for some minimal swelling and bruising, which can last up to two to three weeks post-op. Bruising can be hidden using some light foundation (women and men) as long as it is not applied directly to the incision area. Unless you have short hair, the incision lines can be mostly hidden by letting your hair fall over the area just in front of your ears. Incision lines are typically a very pale pink by about three to four weeks post-procedure.
Upper or Lower Lids
Sutures dissolve on their own. Minimal swelling and/or bruising may occur but dissipate within seven to 10 days post-procedure. Most patients are out and about at 72 hours after their procedure, donning their sunglasses.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Healing can take two to three weeks. The skin needs time to regenerate from what is essentially a controlled bad sunburn. During the healing period, you will need to keep a coating of special ointment on your face to protect the skin. You may have some scabbing and peeling, as well.

Smyth, MD, in Cincinnati OH has performed more than 3,000 minimally-invasive facelifts and thousands of other surgical and non-surgical, anti-aging, facial cosmetic procedures, including upper eyelifts, lower eyelid lifts, brow lifts, submental liposuction, laser skin resurfacing, chin implants, injectables (dermal fillers) and Botox. Next Generation Dermal Fillers

Something for every facial need.

Next Generation Dermal Fillers Cincinnati, OHGetting older means not only getting facial lines and wrinkles, but for many people, loss of facial volume (fullness), as well. Volume loss can cause our cheeks to flatten, our nasolabial lines (creases/valleys from the nose to the mouth) to deepen, and our skin to sag.

Causing the volume loss is a natural diminishing of the collagen, fatty tissue and underlying structures that keep our cheeks looking full and our skin looking smooth when we’re younger. And while dermal fillers can plump up areas where volume loss has occurred, they cannot rid the face of excess, sagging skin. This is why many patients need the combination of a facelift and dermal fillers to achieve the results they desire.

Dermal fillers, also known as injectables, have been around for several years. Among the most popular are injectable gels from Juvederm® and Restylane, each product designed to treat a specific problem area of the face.

The positive changes these fillers can make (when performed by a highly-experienced facial cosmetic surgeon or other facial practitioner) have made them an effective way to reduce signs of aging. Dermal fillers are not the end-all solution for every patient, but they can deliver significant results and, as such, are worth exploring. As with all facial rejuvenation treatments, find an experienced physician who will take time to discuss what’s best for you.

Here’s a quick look at some of the newest and proven, next generation of dermal fillers designed to rejuvenate the face for a naturally-younger look. Want to know more? Call Dr. Robert J. Smyth, facial cosmetic surgeon and specialist with 30+ years of experience, in Cincinnati OH at 513.351.0020.

Men and Eyelifts

7 facts every man should know

Men and Eyelifts Cincinnati, OHA growing number of men age 40 and older, concerned about the bags and puffiness under their eyes or the loose and droopy skin in their upper lids, are looking into having “something done” to return their eyes to their natural, younger look.

Whatever might have held men back in the past –- whether worried they wouldn’t look the same after surgery, afraid of being called vain by friends and family, or simply concerned about the procedure itself –– men today are increasingly visiting facial cosmetic surgeons to get the facts about eyelid lifts and to see if they are a candidate for the procedure.

Here are 7 facts about eyelid lifts that every man should know.

FACT #1: Eyelid surgery is not painful.
Upper and/or lower eyelid surgery performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati OH is done under strictly local anesthesia to eliminate the risks and longer healing time associated with general anesthesia. Eyelid procedures are not painful. You are provided some light sedation and are kept entirely comfortable throughout the blepharoplasty which takes less than an hour. Many patients fall asleep during the procedure. Because of the light sedation, you will need someone to drive them to and from their procedure, but most patients are comfortable driving again at about 48 hours post-procedure.

FACT #2: The lower eyelid lift and upper eyelid lift are two separate procedures. They can be done individually or in combination.
Lower Eyelid Lift (eliminates/minimizes under eye bags and puffiness)
Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) may be recommended for removing the puffy bags under the eyes. In this procedure, the incision is artfully placed directly under the eye where it becomes invisible after healing. Dermal fillers specially designated for the thin and fragile skin in the under eye area also may be indicated for filling out the hollows and smoothing fine lines.

Upper Eyelid Lift (gets rid of saggy, drooping upper lids)
The typical upper eyelid surgery procedure (upper blepharoplasty) involves the surgeon artfully making a very skinny incision in the natural crease of the upper lid, removing extra skin and fat and closing the incision. Placing the incision in the natural crease ensures it is almost entirely invisible once healed. In some cases, Botox injections might also be suggested to lessen or eliminate squint lines between the brows and/or at the corners of the eyes.

FACT #3: You can go out in public at about 72 hours post-procedure, wearing sunglasses.
Eyelid lifts are among the fastest healing of all facial rejuvenation procedures. You will be asked to apply ice to the affected eye area for about 15-20 minutes, three times a day for the first two days post-procedure. The round eye gel packs you keep chilled in the freezer work well and can easily be found at your local pharmacy or online. Sutures dissolve on their own so there’s no worry about suture removal. Most patients are out and about within 3-4 days post-procedure donning sunglasses to protect against squinting. You should not touch, rub or pull on your eyes for two-three weeks post-procedure. TIP: If you wear prescription glasses or contacts, you might want to have a pair of prescription sunglasses to use during your healing period.

FACT #4: You may have some minimal bruising and/or swelling.
A bit of slight bruising and/or swelling around the eye area is not uncommon post-procedure. Full recovery (all bruising or swelling gone) can take up to 10 days to disappear. The skinny incision line mostly fades within a week post-op.

FACT #5: The approach to a man’s eyelift should be different vs. a woman’s.
A man’s eye area (eye and brow) is typically straighter across and with the brow lower than a woman’s eye area. To maintain a masculine look, it is important the surgeon not remove too much of the skin and fat in the upper lid which could feminize the eye. Ask your surgeon his or her approach to the male eye.

FACT #6: The goal should be an entirely natural, refreshed look. You, but younger.
Younger, refreshed looking eyes that turn back the clock without changing your natural eye shape should be the goal of an eyelid procedure –– NEVER a pulled or startled look in the upper lids and NEVER a hollowed-out look under the eyes. Be sure to discuss expectations with your surgeon in advance.

FACT #7: You play a role in getting and maintaining best results.
To ensure you get the most out of your eyelid surgery, protect your eyes from the sun by wearing quality sunglasses not just in the summer but year-round. A high-quality eye cream that moisturizes the tender skin around the eyes, encourages the production of collagen and elastin, and nourishes the eye area to retain resiliency and firmness is also important. There are a growing number of products made specifically for men. Check out “eye creams for men” online, or stop by Sephora, Ulta, or your favorite department store to see the shelves filled with excellent options. TIP: As with any facial rejuvenation procedure, healthy habits such as eating a good diet, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and not smoking are essential to keeping your eyes looking their best.

Fight Facial Aging in 3 Steps

A guide to what treatment you need and when.

Fight Facial AgingFacial aging is a gradual process that begins in our 20s as the hyaluronic acid which naturally occurs in our skin and gives it its natural fullness and elasticity begins to break down. As the firmness of our facial skin slowly decreases, the result can be facial wrinkles, lines around our lips and from our nose to our mouth, hollowed cheeks, and loose and sagging skin. Also affecting the aging of our face are our genetics, lifestyle, sun damage, smoking, and stress, and other factors –– some we can control; some we cannot.

What are our options for fighting facial aging, and when is the right time to do what? Here’s a quick guide.

There are basically three categories of anti-aging facial treatments:

(1) Injectables/Dermal Fillers
(2) Skin Resurfacing
(3) Facial Cosmetic Surgery/Facelift

These treatments can be performed individually or in combination depending on the specific problem(s) the patient faces. It’s not uncommon for patients to start with injectables/fillers and move on to surgical treatments as signs of aging worsen and injectables/fillers no longer deliver desired results.

PROBLEM:
Minor lines and wrinkles, hollowed areas under the eyes, flattening out of the cheeks, squint and frown lines.
ANTI-AGING SOLUTION:
Injectables (dermal fillers) such as Restylane®, Juvederm® and Voluma® can be used to fill wrinkles and even out facial contours for a smoother, more youthful look. Botox® is used to counteract the vertical frown lines that form between the eyebrows (called “11’s”), horizontal lines on the forehead, and squint lines at the corners of the eyes.

PROBLEM:
Deep lines and wrinkles and/or irregular pigmentation due to sun damage, smoking, or poor diet. Rough and uneven skin caused by acne.
ANTI-AGING SOLUTION:
Laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion or physician-grade skin treatments can be used to improve the quality of the skin and restore it to its more youthful texture and smoothness.

PROBLEM:
Loose, sagging and excess skin in the cheeks, jowls, and neck area.
ANTI-AGING SOLUTION:
Only a facelift can remove excess skin. No treatment other than today’s minimally-invasive surgical facelift can get rid of the extra skin that naturally occurs as we age, or that results from significant weight loss. One highly-proven facelift is the leading, minimally-invasive facelift procedure performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth MD, face and neck cosmetic surgeon and specialist in Cincinnati OH. Dr. Smyth has performed more than 3,000 of these procedures, called the Timeless Lift™. This facelift rids the lower face and neck of droopy, sagging, excess skin to restore the smooth jawline and neck of our younger years. The result is a totally natural, “younger you” look –– NEVER pulled or windswept.

Results of the Timeless Lift™ facelift will typically last 8-10 years depending on the patient’s lifestyle, use of sunscreen, and not smoking. The Timeless Lift™ is performed under strictly local anesthesia, eliminating the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia. Most patients need only one to two weeks to recover before returning to normal activities. Some are out and about within 3-4 days post-procedure.

Your facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist wants nothing more than to deliver the results you want, so be sure to share with him or her what’s bothering you, your expectations, and your career/schedule so that you can allow adequate time for the healing process.

Fillers for Wrinkles

4 popular face fillers that work

Fillers for WrinklesUnhappy with the wrinkles, lines and folds you see in your face, but not yet ready for a facelift? You may be an ideal candidate for today’s safe and effective, non-surgical dermal fillers, also known as injectables.

In the hands of an experienced facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist, these office-administered treatments can do a remarkable job of temporarily softening or removing moderate to severe facial lines, wrinkles and folds. They deliver superb and immediate results whether used alone or in combination with a facelift. They can last for months to more than a year, and can be repeated as needed.

Here are 4 dermal fillers for wrinkles that you need to know about.

(1) Restylane®
Dr. Robert J. Smyth, facial cosmetic surgeon specializing in just the face and neck area for 30+ years, prefers this dermal filler for the delicate area under the eyes. Specially formulated for the thinner under eye skin, Restylane allows him to fill sunken areas and add volume subtly and gently for natural results that leave the face and eyes looking refreshed and more youthful. FDA approved. NOTE: New forms of Restylane are being introduced for use in other areas of the face, as well. Ask your surgeon for details.
Results: Can last up to 18 months
Cost: Usually priced by the “syringe”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per syringe. Example: The area under your eyes may require two syringes at initial treatment.

(2) Botox® (injectable)
Botox has become the gold standard among cosmetic surgeons for temporarily smoothing facial wrinkles, especially the vertical lines between the eyebrows (the “11’s”), creases at the corners of the eyes (squint lines), and horizontal wrinkles in the forehead. Botox is the brand name of this toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. FDA approved.
Results: Typically 3 to 6 months
Cost: Usually priced by the “unit”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per unit. Example: The area between the brows may require 10 units of Botox at your initial treatment.

(3) Juvederm®
Juvederm is a tried and true dermal gel containing a modified hyaluronic acid identical to a naturally occurring building block found in the human body. Dr. Smyth uses this face filler to smooth away lines and wrinkles in the nasolabial folds (along the sides of the nose and mouth), in the cheeks and chin areas, delivering natural results. FDA approved.
Results: Typically up to one year or longer
Cost: Usually priced by the “syringe”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per syringe. Example: The nasolabial area may require two syringes at initial treatment.

(4) Voluma®
Voluma is the first and only FDA-approved dermal filler designed specifically to correct volume loss in the cheek area. This injectable gel subtly returns the cheeks to the fuller, natural look of your younger years. It is part of the Juvederm family of fillers.
Results: Can last up to two years
Cost: Usually priced by the “syringe”. Ask your surgeon his or her cost per syringe. Example: The cheeks may require two syringes at initial treatment.

Remember to…

•  Discuss your concerns and expectations with your surgeon. There is a definite art to treatment. Choose someone who is highly experienced. Start conservatively –– and add more later, if needed.
•  Inform your facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist of any allergies or medical conditions you have, any muscle or nerve conditions you have or have been treated for in the past, and all medications you currently take.
•  Enter carefully into savings “deals”, “packages”, “parties” and pricing offers that require you to have more dermal fillers than you actually need in order to get a savings. An overdone face is not worth the money saved.

Getting Rid of Neck Fat

Your options and their effectiveness

Cosmetic Surgery Neck Fat Cincinnati, OH“What can be done about this fat in my neck?”

Extra fat in the neck is one of the most common complaints of both women and men. The fatty deposits that can make it difficult to wear certain necklines or uncomfortable to button a dress shirt can be due to being overweight. However, a full neck is just as often a product of our genes, meaning it runs in your family. And, while neck fat often becomes a problem as we age, it also can be bothersome for people as young as in their 30s.

Whatever the reason for the fullness, there are several options for getting rid of neck fat. Among the most popular procedures are the following, according to facial cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Robert J. Smyth, MD, located in Cincinnati OH, who has 30+ years of experience specializing in rejuvenation of just the face and neck area.

Submental Liposuction
This simple procedure is performed under strictly local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. Dr. Smyth makes a small incision discretely hidden under the chin where no one can see it. He then uses a tiny canula to remove the excess fat from that area. Patients feel no pain or discomfort and avoid the risks and recovery associated with general anesthesia. After the procedure, patients leave with a small bandage over the tiny incision and are asked to wear a bandage wrap that goes under their chin and up over the top of their head for 24 hours post-op.

Some patients may experience a bit of bruising after their procedure, but most go back to work and resume activities within two days post-procedure. Submental liposuction delivers immediate results that last six to 10 years, provided the patient maintains a fairly steady weight over that period of time.

Submental liposuction can be performed by itself or in combination with a Timeless Lift™, the minimally invasive neck lift/lower facelift that targets loose skin in the lower face, jowls and neck, and that gently lifts the face, neck and jawline to an entirely natural but younger look for the patient.

Kybella®
This double-chin-reducing procedure involves injecting a fat-dissolving prescription substance (deoxycholic acid) into the fatty deposits of the neck. The acid dissolves the fat around the area of injection. Treatment is customized to the needs of each patient and their desired results. Most patients need three to four treatments, with several dozen injections per treatment. The destroyed fat cells can no longer store fat. However, future fluctuations in weight gain will result in the development of new fat cells in the chin area. As such, it is important for patients to maintain a steady weight if they expect long lasting results from Kybella treatment.

Check out the before and after photos of actual Kybella patients on the KYBELLA website. You will see some patients receiving better results than others in terms of how much fullness is actually eliminated. Typically speaking, younger patients whose skin is still resilient will have better results with KYBELLA than older patients whose skin is showing signs of laxity.

CoolSculpting®
CoolSculpting is fat-freezing technology that uses a machine to suction and reduce fat from under the chin. CoolSculpting results can take weeks to months to appear, and most patients require more than one treatment. CoolSculpting may need to be repeated every few years, depending upon the patient, their general health, weight, etc.

NOTE––All facial cosmetic surgical procedures performed by Dr. Smyth are done with the patient having strictly local anesthesia along with a small amount of relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout their procedure and are spared the risks and longer healing time associated with general anesthesia.

Fitting Cosmetic Surgery into Your Life

How long before you can “be seen” again?

Cosmetic Surgery Cincinnati, OH“How long before I can go out in public?” ”How many days should I be off work?” “How long before I’m healed enough so that no one knows I had anything done?”

For most people, one of the biggest hurdles to having a facial cosmetic procedure is fitting it into their life. We understand. It’s hard to carve out time in your busy schedule to do something just for you, especially when you may not want people to know that you’re having something done (whether a surgical procedure or non-surgical treatment).

Although everyone heals at a different pace, based on their age, general health, skin and hair coloring, and on the procedure(s) performed, here are some general guidelines for recovery times from Dr. Robert J. Smyth, MD, Cosmetic Surgeon and specialist in just the face and neck for 30+ years, located in Cincinnati OH.

Minimally-Invasive Facelift (Timeless Lift™)

First 48 hours post-procedure: Patients wear a wrap from under their chin to over the top of their head, and apply ice over the wrap to affected areas. Patients should relax, avoid activities that cause them to work up a sweat, and not lift anything heavy for the first two weeks following surgery.
Days 3-7 post-procedure: Healing continues. Apply warm compresses to areas where any bruising may have occurred. Patients can shower and gently wash their hair. No hair coloring or hairspray near the incision line.
Day 8: Sutures are removed.
Days 10-14: Most patients return to work and social activities. Typically, women can hide the incision (skinny line tucked into the natural crease in front of and behind the ear) with a few strands of hair.
Day 21: If desired, women and men can apply a bit of skin-colored makeup to hide the incision line which by now is typically a very light pink color. Or, they can hide it with their hair. Most patients can return to non-contact sports and other more rigorous activities at this time. Always apply sunscreen to the incision line.
GOOD TO HAVE ON HAND: Electric toothbrush so that you don’t have to open your mouth as wide (stretch your facial skin) to brush your teeth for the first week or so after your procedure.

Submental Liposuction

Patients may have some minor bruising or swelling and can apply ice to the affected area under the chin. Otherwise, they can return to normal activities but nothing rigorous for the first 72 hours post-procedure. Sutures dissolve on their own.

Upper and/or Lower Eyelids (Blepharoplasty)

First 48 hours post-procedure: Patients apply gel ice packs to the eye area. Patients should relax, avoid activities that cause them to work up a sweat, and not lift anything heavy for first two weeks following surgery. Patients should not drive a car or operate any dangerous machinery.
Days 3-7 post-procedure: Apply warm compresses to the eye area if any bruising or swelling have occurred. Many patients put on sunglasses and return to normal activities at this point, avoiding anything strenuous including rigorous sports. Sutures dissolve on their own.
By Day 8-10: Most people return to work and social activities.
Day 21: Patients can gently apply eye makeup, being careful not to tug or pull on the upper or lower lid area.
GOOD TO HAVE ON HAND: If needed, prescription glasses and sunglasses. Contact lens wearers should wait to use their contacts until three weeks after surgery.

Brow Lift

First 48 hours post-procedure: Patients apply gel ice packs to the affected area. Patients should relax, avoid activities that cause them to work up a sweat, and not lift anything heavy for first two weeks following surgery. Patients should not drive a car or operate any dangerous machinery.
Days 3-7 post-procedure: Apply warm compresses to the affected area if any bruising or swelling have occurred.
Day 8: Sutures are removed. Many patients return to normal activities at this point, still avoiding anything strenuous including heavy lifting or rigorous sports.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

First 48 hours post-procedure: Patients apply gel ice packs to the treated area. They also need to cleanse (dab) the area two to three times daily (do not rub), and apply a layer of Aquaphor ointment. The treated areas will be pinkish red during the healing process.
Days 3-7 post-procedure: Continue to clean the area and apply the ointment as directed above.
Days 8-14: Apply warm compresses as needed for any swelling. Patients may use their own skin moisturizer at this point and also gently apply a light makeup foundation to the treated area.

Chin or Pre-Jowl Implant

Patients may have some minor bruising or swelling and can apply ice to the affected area as needed. Otherwise, they can return to normal activities, but nothing rigorous for the first 72 hours post-procedure. Sutures dissolve on their own.

Dermal Fillers and Botox®

There may be some minimal redness for a few hours following injections of Botox®, Juvederm, Restylane, or Voluma, but most patients return to work and normal (not strenuous) activities same day or the next day.

IMPORTANT NOTE––All facial cosmetic surgical procedures performed by Dr. Smyth are done with the patient having strictly local anesthesia along with a small amount of relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout their procedure and are spared the risks and longer healing time associated with general anesthesia. Because of taking the relaxation medication, patients must have someone drive them to and from their procedure. Patients should not drive a car or operate any type of dangerous machinery for the first 24 hours after a surgical procedure.

How to Reduce a Double Chin

3 ways to get your best facial profile

Reduce a Double Chin Cincinnati, OHA double chin is a common complaint of women and men ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s. Extra fat (submental fat) and fullness in the chin area can make you look older than your years. It also can make it unattractive for women to wear certain necklines and uncomfortable for men to wear dress shirts and ties.

The first step to reducing a double chin is to determine what is causing it. Heredity is a leading cause and one that you can do little about –– simply put, double chins can run in a family. Being overweight is another major cause and weight loss of even 10 to 20 pounds can show significant improvement.

Whatever the reason for your double chin, you don’t need to fret about it for a lifetime. You can take next steps and start feeling better about yourself right now. Here are popular three options for reducing and/or eliminating a double chin.

Submental Liposuction

Submental liposuction is a quick, minimally invasive surgical procedure in which Dr. Robert J. Smyth, face and neck rejuvenation surgeon and specialist in Cincinnati, OH, makes a small incision discretely hidden under the chin where no one can see it. He then uses a tiny canula to remove the excess fat from that area. This simple procedure is performed under strictly local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes.

Kybella®

KYBELLA® is an injectable, prescription medicine (deoxycholic acid) used to improve the appearance and profile of extra fat below the chin. Take a minute to look at the before and after photos of actual Kybella patients on the KYBELLA website. You will see some patients receiving better results than others in terms of how much fullness is actually eliminated. Typically speaking, younger patients whose skin is still resilient will have better results with KYBELLA than older patients whose skin is showing signs of laxity. Also, KYBELLA is not a permanent solution. Several treatments are generally needed to attain desired results, and treatments may need to be repeated every couple of years.

Making Your Decision

If you want to get rid of your double chin and get a quick and long-lasting return on their investment, submental liposuction may be your best choice. However, if you hate the thought of undergoing even the most minor of procedures, you may want to consider KYBELLA injections or CoolSculpting treatments.

In making your decision, you’ll want to consider the overall cost, as well. Submental liposuction will be a one and done charge. However, with both KYBELLA and CoolSculpting, you’ll need to think beyond strictly dollar amount to the cost per treatment multiplied by the number of treatments needed.

Bottom line, whether looking at Submental Liposuction, KYBELLA or CoolSculpting for reducing a double chin, be sure to visit several facial cosmetic rejuvenation surgeons/specialists, ask questions, and determine your overall total cost before choosing your preferred option.
