How to Reduce a Double Chin

3 ways to get your best facial profile

Reduce a Double Chin Cincinnati, OHA double chin is a common complaint of women and men ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s. Extra fat (submental fat) and fullness in the chin area can make you look older than your years. It also can make it unattractive for women to wear certain necklines and uncomfortable for men to wear dress shirts and ties.

The first step to reducing a double chin is to determine what is causing it. Heredity is a leading cause and one that you can do little about –– simply put, double chins can run in a family. Being overweight is another major cause and weight loss of even 10 to 20 pounds can show significant improvement.

Whatever the reason for your double chin, you don’t need to fret about it for a lifetime. You can take next steps and start feeling better about yourself right now. Here are popular three options for reducing and/or eliminating a double chin.

Submental Liposuction

Submental liposuction is a quick, minimally invasive surgical procedure in which Dr. Robert J. Smyth, face and neck rejuvenation surgeon and specialist in Cincinnati, OH, makes a small incision discretely hidden under the chin where no one can see it. He then uses a tiny canula to remove the excess fat from that area. This simple procedure is performed under strictly local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. Patients feel no pain or discomfort and avoid the risks and recovery associated with general anesthesia. After the procedure, patients leave with a small bandage over the tiny incision and are asked to wear a bandage wrap that goes under their chin and up over the top of their head for 24 hours post-op. Some patients may experience a bit of bruising after their procedure, but most go back to work and resume activities within two days post-procedure. Submental liposuction delivers immediate results that last six to 10 years, provided the patient maintains a fairly steady weight over that period of time.

Kybella®

KYBELLA® is an injectable, prescription medicine (deoxycholic acid) used to improve the appearance and profile of extra fat below the chin. Take a minute to look at the before and after photos of actual Kybella patients on the KYBELLA website. You will see some patients receiving better results than others in terms of how much fullness is actually eliminated. Typically speaking, younger patients whose skin is still resilient will have better results with KYBELLA than older patients whose skin is showing signs of laxity. Also, KYBELLA is not a permanent solution. Several treatments are generally needed to attain desired results, and treatments may need to be repeated every couple of years.

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting is fat-freezing technology that uses a machine to suction and reduce fat from under the chin. CoolSculpting results can take weeks to months to appear, and most patients require more than one treatment. CoolSculpting may need to be repeated every few years, depending upon the patient, their general health, weight, etc.

Making Your Decision

If you want to get rid of your double chin and get a quick and long-lasting return on their investment, submental liposuction may be your best choice. However, if you hate the thought of undergoing even the most minor of procedures, you may want to consider KYBELLA injections or CoolSculpting treatments.

In making your decision, you’ll want to consider the overall cost, as well. Submental liposuction will be a one and done charge. However, with both KYBELLA and CoolSculpting, you’ll need to think beyond strictly dollar amount to the cost per treatment multiplied by the number of treatments needed.

Bottom line, whether looking at Submental Liposuction, KYBELLA or CoolSculpting for reducing a double chin, be sure to visit several facial cosmetic rejuvenation surgeons/specialists, ask questions, and determine your overall total cost before choosing your preferred option.

Smyth in Cincinnati OH has performed more than 3,000 minimally-invasive facelifts and thousands of other surgical and non-surgical, anti-aging, facial cosmetic procedures, including upper eyelifts, lower eyelid lifts, brow lifts, submental liposuction, laser skin resurfacing, chin implants, injectables (dermal fillers) and Botox. Brow Lifts are Just One Option

Getting the refreshed-looking eyes of your younger years.

Brow LiftA heavy-looking brow area –- speaking in terms of the structure of our face, not in terms of having thick, dark eyebrows –– can make us look tired, angry, sad or distressed when in fact we are feeling just fine. What happens, even as young as in our early 40s, is our forehead region starts to show signs of laxity as part of our genetics and the normal aging process due to the natural loss of collagen.

“Patients often come in believing they need a brow lift to correct this problem when, in fact, an upper eyelid lift or a combination of both a brow lift and upper eyelid lift are the best solution,” says Dr. Robert J. Smyth, facial cosmetic surgeon and facial rejuvenation specialist, in Cincinnati OH.

“There’s no one solution that’s right for everyone,” adds Dr. Smyth. “Each patient is unique by their bone structure, resilience of their facial muscles and condition of their skin. I look at the eyes, brows and forehead as one region, all needing to work together to provide the natural look my patients desire.”

In addition to surgical solutions to eliminate heaviness in the brow and forehead region are non-surgical treatments, such as injections of Botox or dermal fillers. “The artful and conservative placement of injectables may remedy the issue on their own, or they can serve as an excellent complement to a brow lift or upper eyelid surgery,” says Dr. Smyth.

If a brow lift is the preferred recommendation, the type of brow lift can vary by the placement of the incisions, again depending on the patient’s needs and if they are male or female. The tiny incisions may be discretely hidden in the upper hairline or at the temples or, for some patients, in both areas.

Before having a brow lift, take time to consult with one or more highly-experienced facial cosmetic surgeons and ask them what they recommend and “why”. Discuss your goal for results and make sure that you and the surgeon are on the same page.

The goal should ALWAYS be a natural-looking brow, eye and forehead region for a refreshed and bright-eyed look –– NEVER a too tight or startled, wide-eyed look.

“I hate my neck.”

Necklift surgery can help you love your neck all over again.

Necklift Cincinnati, OH“I hate all of this loose, crepey skin in my neck. The wrinkly folds and creases look terrible. Same for these vertical lines in the front of my neck. I feel so self-conscious wearing open necklines. I don’t know if it’s from being out in the sun or just from getting older, but what happened to my younger-looking neck?”

Many women in their 50s and older share these same feelings recently expressed by one of our consultation patients. An aging neck can cause us not only to be unhappy with our looks but also to change how we dress, even to the point of no longer donning formal wear, open neck tops or shirts. Often, a scarf becomes our go-to accessory no matter what the time of year.

Necklift surgery can make a world of difference.

As we age, the skin in our neck typically begins to show laxity, and the muscle bands become more visible. Add to this the excess and sagging skin in the lower face that creates jowls, and the result is our lower face and neck area look droopy and older than our chronological age.

The aging of the neck and lower face can be caused by genetics, sun damage, gravity, stress, and poor nutrition. Only a surgical procedure will eliminate the excess loose skin, remedy the prominent muscle bands, and improve the tone of the neck skin.

The Timeless Lift® performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati is a proven solution. This combined lower facelift and necklift surgery restores a younger and natural looking jawline and a smoother, lifted neck area. The procedure also includes tightening of loose neck muscles/vertical neckbands (platysmaplasty).

Patients benefit by getting natural results in one procedure, one cost and one healing period. Results last six to 10 years depending on how well you take care of your health, protect your skin from sun damage and avoid smoking.

Should you also have excess fat under your chin, the necklift surgery (Timeless Lift) can include Submental Liposuction, a quick and simple procedure that removes the excess fat and helps to achieve a more defined jawline and refined-looking neck.

The Timeless Lift® is performed under local anesthesia, with patients being entirely comfortable throughout the procedure but without the risks and longer recovery time associated with general anesthesia. Recovery can include some minor bruising and swelling but most patients return to work and full activities at 9-12 days post procedure.

WATCHOUT: Make sure to discuss expectations with your face and neck cosmetic surgeon/specialist. While a facelift/necklift surgery can improve the face and neck area, it cannot significantly improve the neck and chest area below the collarbone.

What’s the right time for a facelift?

When fillers and Botox no longer do the trick.

Facelift Cincinnati, OHThe use of non-surgical facial cosmetic procedures such as injections of Botox, laser skin resurfacing, peels, and dermal fillers (Juvederm. Restylane, Voluma) has increased by double digits in recent years. This surge makes sense in that as consumers we typically gravitate to “non-surgical” treatments as a first and less invasive step toward regaining or maintaining our younger-looking face.

Some people can get by with fillers, Botox, and other non-surgical treatments for years, especially if they start in their 40s. However, there comes a time when non-surgical options no longer do the trick and facelift surgery becomes your best and proven choice for turning back the clock. That time is when you have loose skin in your cheeks, jowls and neck area.

No filler can remove excess skin, and no skin treatments can replicate the beautiful and long-lasting results of today’s minimally invasive facelift, such as the Timeless Lift™ performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati OH. Only a facelift can remove the loose skin in your face and neck that makes you look older than you are.

While treatments such as Kybella and Cool Sculpting promise to tighten the skin of the lower face and neck, the results do not last nearly as long as a facelift. Further, these treatments are most effective on younger skin that is still resilient and taut versus loose sagging skin. Again, only a facelift can remove excess, sagging skin.

As such, Kybella and CoolSculpting can wind up costing more than facelift surgery over the long term, because these treatments may need to be repeated every year or so. By comparison, the Timeless Lift™ lasts six to 10 years for most people, depending on your lifestyle, protecting your skin from the sun, and not smoking. One other point of comparison, results of facelift surgery are immediate whereas other treatments can take weeks or months to show any improvement.

Many patients find that facelift surgery along with a good skincare regimen, daily use of sunscreen, and fillers and Botox as needed provide them the natural, refreshed, younger appearance that has friends and family wondering why they look so good – not to mention being the best return on their investment.

If you’re looking for a facelift in Cincinnati, we invite you to call for a complimentary consultation with cosmetic surgeon and face and neck rejuvenation specialist, Dr. Robert J. Smyth. With more than 30 years of experience and having performed more than 3,000 minimally invasive facelifts, Dr. Smyth is a trusted and proven expert in the field. Remember too, Dr. Smyth performs the Timeless Lift™ under strictly local anesthesia, which means a faster recovery and none of the risks associated with general anesthesia. His patients are fully comfortable during surgery, thanks to a small amount of relaxation medicine. Most return to full activities at about 10-14 days post-procedure.

To find out if you’re a candidate for a facelift in Cincinnati with Dr. Smyth, please schedule your complimentary personal consultation by calling 513.201.8490. You can trust Dr. Smyth to give you honest advice and never to try to sell you on a treatment or procedure you do not need.

Rejuvenate your face with Juvederm®

The dermal filler that helps to turn back time.

Juvederm Timeless YouAs if getting lines and wrinkles weren’t enough as we get older, we also tend to lose some of the underlying fat and support structure (collagen) in our faces. The once youthful fullness in our cheeks starts to flatten out, while the area around our mouth may show creases and valleys, and the nasolabial folds (parentheses-shaped lines from the outer corners of our nose to the outer corners of our mouth) also might deepen.

For some people, the best way to reverse these signs of aging especially where excess skin is causing drooping and sagging may be a minimally invasive lower facelift. However, for many people particularly those in their later 40s and 50s, using a dermal filler such as Juvederm® to fill and soften the creases and folds can provide a beautiful, non-surgical solution with results lasting up to a year.

Juvederm® is the first injectable gel (dermal filler) for wrinkles and folds to be FDA-approved. It comes in different variations depending on what part of the face is in need of treatment. Juvederm® XC, the #1 selling filler in the US, is typically used for lines, wrinkles and folds around the mouth and to soften the nasolabial area. Another variation, Juvederm® Voluma XC, is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel for the cheek area. It instantly creates contour and a subtle, natural lift to the cheeks, restoring a more youthful profile.

Juvederm® fillers are used by Dr. Robert J. Smyth, facial cosmetic surgeon and face and neck rejuvenation specialist, either alone or to further refine areas of the face following a lower facelift. Using a very fine gauge needle, Dr. Smyth gently injects the filler under the skin just where needed for the natural results patients want. Juvederm® products contain a common anesthetic called Lidocaine to reduce any discomfort. The Lidocaine takes effect immediately and most patients are very comfortable throughout the treatment.

“Results are instant and natural and treatments can be repeated as needed, making Juvederm® a popular and proven anti-aging tool,” says Dr. Smyth. “That being said, dermal fillers cannot get rid of loose and sagging excess skin. Only a minimally invasive facelift such as the Timeless Lift™ can remove excess skin.”

What makes a woman age beautifully?

The secret all of us have inside

She’s lovely. She’s every woman who defies time and who doesn’t look her age or at least how society perceives she should look at her age. She’s short, tall, thin, full figured, toned or not. She has light hair, dark hair, a short bob or wavy curls. Her skin color doesn’t matter nor does her ethnicity. And whether her skin is still smooth, or the years have left their mark in lines and wrinkles… she’s lovely.

You know her. You’ve seen her. She’s comfortable and confident in her own skin. And it shows.

She doesn’t need to be the center of attention. No longer does she feel the urge to compete to be the leanest, the most fit, the wealthiest, best dressed or most accomplished. She’s current and chic, engaged in family and friends and interested in the world around her. What she does now, she does for herself. Challenges and problems still land at her door, but she handles them with a calmer attitude. She’s entering a new phase of her life and instead of dreading it, she’s excited about all that lies ahead. She’s reached a level of positive acceptance.

At long last, more and more women are becoming increasingly comfortable with the aging process and counter to what some may think, a gracious acceptance of this stage of one’s life can be very attractive.

Truth be told, there’s an inherent beauty to the grace and poise that come with the passage of time. Squint lines highlight eyes that twinkle with memories. Wrinkled hands that have cooked and cleaned, washed and ironed, run companies, driven trucks, fought in the military, applauded at hundreds of kids’ and grandkids’ games remain delightful to hold. “Grandma arms” still give the best hugs across generations, and legs that may no longer don short shorts are more than happy to jog, walk, play sports and pursue an errant toddler.

As women, we know all of this to be true, yet too often we still strive to meet some standard of beauty and lifestyle that is unattainable for most. We think that if we just lose 20 pounds, or get that expensive outfit or move into our dream home that happiness will certainly follow. In his book titled The Happiness Advantage, author Shawn Achor challenges us to think differently.

Achor’s message is directed to the workplace, but his principles hold true for us in our personal lives, as well. He writes… “Everyone knows that if you work hard, you will be more successful in life, and if you are more successful, then you’ll be happy, right? Recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology show that this formula is actually backward: happiness fuels success, not the other way around.”
Now then, let’s plug in the traditional path many women encounter… “Everyone knows that if you work hard to be more beautiful, thinner, smarter, more fit and more talented at everything from decorating and cooking, to entertaining and gardening, to running your own business as well as your household, you will be more successful in life, and if you are more successful, then you’ll be happy, right? We all know this not to be the case. Instead of happiness, we attain constant craziness.

You may be thinking this message of acceptance strange in that it’s coming from a facial cosmetic surgeon’s office. Not so. After 30+ years of performing thousands and thousands of surgical facial procedures and non-surgical treatments on women, Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati, OH will be the first to tell you there is nothing more beautiful than a woman who’s happy with herself.

That’s not to say we should quit trying to be our healthiest or to look our best. What it means is that it’s okay to give ourselves the permission to do what matters to us. If that means Botox to soften or erase age lines, or an eyelid lift to freshen our face, or a facelift to remove loose skin from our face and neck, then do it. However, if such signs of aging don’t bother us, then we should be able to relax in the comfort we have in our appearance. Let no one else determine how we choose to age.

In a nutshell, there are no rules to aging beautiful except to do it our own way. Forget the models and magazines, the miracle creams and magic potions. Beautiful is not one look… but many.

Each of us has the power within to approach getting older with a positive acceptance… and it really can be quite beautiful.

What makes you feel beautiful? Let us know. Email us at robertsmythmd@fuse.net.

How do you know if you need a brow lift?

Who makes a good candidate and why.

Brow Lift in Cincinnati, OHThe aging process spares no part of our faces, not even our brow and forehead region. While some faces age more gracefully than others, everything in time starts to soften and droop from the natural loss of collagen and the resulting skin laxity. For some people, an aging brow and forehead region can change their facial expression to a look of tiredness, unhappiness, sadness and/or anger which, in turn, can affect how others respond to them. That being said, drooping upper eyelids also can cause the same change of facial countenance.

The question then becomes, “Would a brow lift resolve the problem, or is an upper eyelid lift preferred, or are both procedures needed for optimal results?”

“As a facial cosmetic surgeon assessing a patient’s face, I look at the eyes, brows and forehead as one region, all needing to work together to provide the natural look my patients desire,” says Dr. Robert J. Smyth, facial cosmetic surgeon/specialist in Cincinnati OH. “Each patient must be viewed individually. While one person may need an upper eyelid lift and perhaps some Botox between their eyebrows to reverse the signs of aging, another patient may fare better with just a brow lift. I’ve also had patients whose aging brow area required a brow lift, upper eyelid lift, and Botox injections in the vertical lines between the eyes and also in the horizontal lines on their forehead.”

“Another consideration is whether the patient is male or female. Generally speaking, the brow line for a man is naturally flatter/straighter than a woman’s brow line which typically has more of a natural arch. The goal is always a natural-looking result, so these inherent differences are critical to acknowledge.”

If a brow lift is recommended, the type of brow lift can vary by the placement of the incisions, again depending on the patient’s needs. The tiny incisions may be artfully hidden in the upper hairline or at the temples or, for some patients, in both areas.

As a patient wondering if a brow lift is right for you, be sure to consult with one or more highly-experienced facial cosmetic surgeons and ask them what they recommend and “why”. Get all of your questions answered, and remember to emphasize that your goal is a natural-looking brow, eye and forehead region for the naturally-refreshed facial expressions that leave you looking younger, bright-eyed, happier, and feeling full of confidence.

Your Upper Eyelid Lift Recovery Calendar

A few days of downtime for years of great results

Besides enjoying the beautiful difference of having an upper eyelid lift, also known as a blepharoplasty, is the fact that upper eyelid surgery is one of the fastest and easiest of all facial rejuvenation procedures when it comes to recovery time.

The healing period for today’s minimally invasive upper eyelid/blepharoplasty (Timeless Eyes™) performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth, face and neck rejuvenation surgeon/specialist in Cincinnati OH, is a matter of days and the results can last 10 years or longer!

Three main reasons for the faster recovery of the Timeless Eyes™ upper eyelid lift…

  1. The procedure is performed under strictly local anesthesia, along with a slight amount of relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout the procedure and are relieved of the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia.
  2. The skinny incisions are artfully placed in the natural crease of the upper eyelid, so that as they heal they quickly become unnoticeable.
  3. The tiny stitches dissolve on their own which means there’s no need for suture removal. You can go back to work and resume non-strenuous activities within 3 to 4 days post-procedure.

To help you plan a best date for your upper eyelid lift, we share Dr. Smyth’s Upper Eyelid/Blepharoplasty Recovery Calendar:

Day 1 Procedure Day

You will need to be at the Outpatient Surgery Center one hour ahead of your scheduled procedure. Because of the light sedation you will be given, you will need to have someone drive you to and from your procedure and stay with you for at least four hours after your procedure. Bring along your sunglasses to wear on your way home. Plan on sleeping on your back this first night, propped with a few pillows behind you to keep you at a 30- to 45-degree angle. No sleeping on your side or stomach. You will be asked to use a topical eye ointment to help the incision line heal.

NOTE: No applying makeup to the upper eyelid area for at least two weeks following your upper eyelid lift. Doing so can risk impacting the results of your procedure. To be avoided especially for the first two weeks post-procedure is any pulling or tugging (no matter how slight) of the upper eyelid region, such as when applying eyeliner and eyeshadow or when removing eye makeup.

Day 2

You may have a slight bit of swelling and/or bruising in the upper eyelid area. This will wane and disappear rapidly. The skinny incision line will be a pinkish color. This too will fade quickly. Do not do any bending over (with your head down), lift objects weighing more than 20 lbs. or engage in any exercise or sports for the first week following your procedure. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can drive today. However, if your vision is even minimally affected by any swelling, wait until the swelling is gone before driving or doing any tasks that could be unsafe.

Days 3-8

Take it easy and let the healing process continue. You don’t have to sit all day, but don’t tackle any heavy-duty physical activities during this time. A good rule of thumb is to avoid anything that causes you to work up a sweat. Continue to wear your sunglasses when outside to avoid squinting.

Day 8

You will come to Dr. Smyth’s medical office at about eight days after your procedure where he will check the incision line and make sure all is healing beautifully. He will advise if he wants you to limit any specific activities for a few more days, but most patients are ready to resume full activities at this time, if they haven’t already done so.

Dr. Smyth’s patients are provided detailed care instructions to follow before and after their upper eyelid lift/blepharoplasty. But, we hope the above Eyelid Recovery Calendar helps you realize how easy it can be to fit an upper eyelid lift into your life. It’s a wonderful procedure for regaining the natural, bright-eyed look of your younger days. Never overdone –– just the natural, refreshed look you want. We welcome any questions you may have.

WORD OF CAUTION: Dr. Smyth has performed thousands of upper eyelid lifts on both women and men. Whether or not you choose Dr. Smyth as your surgeon, be sure to discuss with your surgeon the “art” of upper eyelid lifts and the differences between a woman’s eye and a man’s eye in order to achieve the entirely natural results desired.

“I don’t like what I see in the mirror.”

Give yourself permission to be at your best.

“Why wouldn’t you want to feel better about yourself?” We heard this comment recently from a patient and it stopped us in our tracks. That’s because it perfectly summarizes why so many people finally make the decision to do something about the effects of time on their face and neck.

The patient had been thinking about having a facelift for several years and that day, after yet again looking in the mirror and not liking what she saw, picked up the phone and called for a consultation. Like many Boomers, she wasn’t ready to “quit” –– not ready to quit working, not quit being engaged in life, not quit trying.

Her motivation to pursue facial rejuvenation was a combination of vanity and something bigger. In a nutshell, it’s not just to look younger. It’s not just to remain current at work or socially. It’s about pursuing the perfectly normal desire to feel better about yourself. That might mean learning a new skill, starting a new or second career, losing weight, getting fit, tackling a big project, pushing yourself to run a race or do something else you’ve never done before. Or, it might mean taking steps to regain your younger-looking face and neck.

Sounds simple enough, yet too often we don’t give ourselves permission to be at our best. Instead, we put everyone and everything else first –– family, work, friends, volunteering, you name it.

Make 2018 the year to pursue whatever it is that will make you feel better about yourself. If it’s to look your natural, “younger-you” best, we hope you will come see board-certified Dr. Robert J. Smyth. With 30+ years of specializing in rejuvenation of just the face and neck, he is known for providing the natural results you want and deserve. You can expect your complimentary consultation to be an easy, no-pressure way to learn what’s new, what’s proven and what might be best for you.

How to Fit a Facelift into Your Life

Check out our 10-day Facelift Recovery Calendar.

Facelift CalendarOne of the greatest concerns of patients considering a facelift is how long will it take to recover which translates to, “Will I be able to fit a facelift into my schedule?”

Good news. Recovery is faster and easier than you may think. The healing time for today’s minimally invasive lower facelift, such as the remarkable Timeless Lift™ performed by Dr. Robert J. Smyth, face and neck rejuvenation surgeon/specialist in Cincinnati OH, is a mere fraction of the time needed for recovery from the more aggressive facelifts of the past… and the results are as good or even better!

Three main reasons for the faster recovery of the Timeless Lift™…

(1) The Timeless Lift™ is performed under strictly local anesthesia, along with a slight amount of relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout the procedure and are relieved of the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia.
(2) Minimally invasive facelift means the surgeon can attain excellent results without interrupting as large an area of skin and without disturbing the deeper structures of the face which, in turn, shortens the healing process and has most patients back to work and routine (not strenuous) activities at 10 days post-procedure.
(3) The skinny incisions are artfully placed in the natural creases in front of and behind the ears, so that as they heal they quickly become unnoticeable. Unless you have very short/cropped hair, you can pull down a few pieces of hair in front of the ear to help hide the incisions during healing.

To help you plan a best date for your facelift, we share Dr. Smyth’s 10-Day Facelift Recovery Calendar:

Day 1 Procedure Day
You will need to be at the Outpatient Surgery Center one hour ahead of your scheduled procedure. Because of the light sedation you will be given, you will need to have someone drive you to and from your procedure and stay with you for at least four hours after your procedure. You will go home wearing a soft compression dressing/bandage that wraps under your chin and up and over the top of your head. The dressing helps the healing process and should be left on for the first 24 hours, including overnight. Plan on sleeping on your back this first night, propped with a few pillows behind you to keep you at a 30- to 45-degree angle. No sleeping on your side or stomach.

Day 2 24-Hour Follow-Up Appointment
You will come to Dr. Smyth’s medical office the morning after your procedure where he will check your incisions and apply a fresh and smaller compression bandage. You can drive yourself to this appointment. The dressing change is painless and takes about 20 minutes. You will need to wear this smaller dressing day and night for the next 24 hours.

Days 3-7
Unwrap your dressing and throw it away. Take it easy and let the healing process continue. You don’t have to sit all day, but don’t tackle any strenuous activities, exercise or sports, and don’t lift anything above 25 pounds during this time. You will be asked to wear a headband or something similar to bed to protect the ear area while you sleep. NOTE: If you’re among the many patients who don’t mind if someone knows you’ve had facial rejuvenation surgery, then feel free at this time to resume easy day-to-day activities, including going out in public, provided you don’t overdo it. You will want to be careful during this time not to do any heavy chewing, not to do anything where you’re constantly bending over, and nothing that causes you to work up a sweat.

Day 8 Suture Removal
You will come to Dr. Smyth’s medical office eight days after your procedure where he will remove the tiny sutures, an entirely painless process that takes only 20-30 minutes. You can drive yourself to this appointment. After suture removal, you’ll still have the very skinny pinkish-red incision line tucked within the crease in front of and behind your ear, but this line quickly fades each day until it all but disappears. DO NOT put any makeup over the incision lines until they are fully healed (at about 2-3 weeks post-procedure). Until the tiny suture holes heal over completely, applying makeup to this area can result in permanent dots of coloration that you do not want. Pull down a few strands of hair to hide the incisions. Another option is to wear a soft, stretchy headband when you’re out in public (and when sleeping for a few more days).

Days 9-10
Most all patients will start venturing out at this point, happy with the excess, saggy skin gone from their jowls and neck and their newly-defined, more youthful jawline. Many go back to work at this point and resume social activities. IMPORTANT: You should not participate in any strenuous activities (jogging, aerobic exercise, heavy lifting) until about three weeks post-procedure. NOTE: Bruising from your facelift is typically minimal if at all. For any residual bruising at this point, simply cover it with a light application of base makeup to the bruised areas as long as you DO NOT get makeup in your incision lines.

Dr. Smyth’s patients are provided detailed care instructions to follow before and after their minimally invasive facelift. But, we hope the above 10-Day Facelift Recovery Calendar helps you realize how easy it can be to fit the Timeless Lift™ into your life. We welcome any questions you may have.
