Spotlight: Lower Facelift/Upper Eyes – Before and After Photos

See the remarkable difference

Nothing says more about the impact that facial cosmetic rejuvenation can have than before and after photos.

That being said, patient photos are rarely shared because most people prefer not to have others know they had facial cosmetic surgery performed. You can trust Dr. Smyth takes patient privacy seriously. The photos we share here and those posted on our website at www.timelessyoumd.com have the consent of the patients. Names and ages are never used.

What’s your cosmetic surgery mindset?

“Want” versus “Do”

Cosmetic Surgery MindsetEver find yourself loving the idea of looking younger, but never pursuing what it might actually take to do so? You’re not alone.

Many people WANT the results that come with natural-looking facial cosmetic surgery –– looking refreshed and younger, feeling more confident, being happier in their work and social life –– until it comes time to schedule a consultation with a facial cosmetic surgeon and proceed with the doctor’s recommendation.

If you’re someone who repeatedly can’t take the next step, ask yourself what’s holding you back.

  • Are you afraid of what other people will think?
  • Do you worry that you can’t afford a facelift or other facial cosmetic procedure?
  • Do you feel guilt for wanting to spend money on yourself?
  • Are you feeling vain for wanting to look better?
  • If you’re a male, do you feel it’s unmanly to have facial cosmetic surgery?
  • Is a spouse of family member being critical of your desire to turn back the clock?
  • Are you concerned that you won’t be happy with the results?

All of these questions are legitimate and understandable. All can be answered during a caring, knowledge-sharing, no-pressure consultation with an experienced facial cosmetic specialist and surgeon, such as Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati, OH, who will be more than happy to discuss any and all concerns you have.

Do yourself a favor. If you’d like to look younger and more refreshed, at least allow yourself to work through whatever is holding you back.

We’d love to help.

Take the mirror test

What’s bothering you about your face?

Timeless You Cincinnati, OH“I look in the mirror and I don’t even know who that person is anymore. It’s like overnight I’ve turned into my dear, sweet grandmother, saggy jowls and all.”

There’s nothing like the mirror test to face head-on the effects of aging.

If you’re happy with what you see in the mirror, that’s great –– don’t let anyone talk you into having facial cosmetic surgery or treatments that you don’t want to have or don’t need.

On the other hand, if something is clearly bothering you about your face or neck and you want to turn back the clock, don’t let anyone talk you out of it. Do your research. Get the opinion of two or three facial cosmetic surgeons and decide for yourself.

Here is a quick guide to the issues that people often find bothersome about their face/neck and the proven procedures/treatments for each.

Sagging Jowls, Cheeks and Neck

Regardless of promises made by any number of products, nothing gets rid of excess, sagging facial skin except having it removed surgically. The minimally-invasive, quick-healing Timeless Lift™ is the proven facelift to remove extra facial skin in the cheeks, jowls, jawline and neck and leave those areas smooth and natural looking.

Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati OH artfully performs the Timeless Lift™ facelift to provide each patient their natural, “younger you” result that never looks tight or pulled but, instead, leaves them looking younger and refreshed. Dr. Smyth has performed more than 3,000 Timeless Lifts™ using strictly local anesthesia along with some slight relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable during the procedure and are spared the risks and longer recovery time associated with general anesthesia.

Heavy, Droopy Upper Lids

An upper eyelid lift (upper blepharoplasty) is the proven way to remove extra, loose skin in the upper lids and to get rid of the heavy, droopy look that can make you look tired and older. Dr. Smyth carefully hides the tiny incision line in the natural crease of the upper lid to provide patients the finest results. He performs upper eyelid lifts, using strictly local anesthesia on the patient, along with some slight relaxation medication. Most patients are ready to be out and about by three days post-procedure, typically wearing sunglasses for the first week post-op.

Puffy, Baggy Lower Eyelids

A lower eyelid lift (lower blepharoplasty) is the surgical method for removing baggy, puffy, loose skin in the undereye area. Dr. Robert J. Smyth carefully hides the tiny incision line just below the eye. He performs lower eyelid lifts, using strictly local anesthesia on the patient, along with some slight relaxation medication. Most patients are ready to be out and about by three days post-procedure, typically wearing sunglasses for the first week post-op.

Brow Lift

The aging process can cause some people to experience a heaviness in their brow area caused by the laxity that naturally occurs in the forehead muscles as we get older. Dr. Robert J. Smyth may recommend a Brow Lift to elevate and restore the brow area to its more youthful look.

Frown Lines/Squint Lines Between and Around the Eyes and in the Forehead Area

Botox® injections have become the modern standard for relaxing the muscles that cause squint lines at the outside edges of the eyes and the vertical lines (the “11’s”) between the eyebrows. Botox also is used to relax and smooth horizontal lines in the forehead area. In the hands of a skilled surgeon such as Dr. Smyth, Botox® injections are a remarkable solution for refreshing the face by softening and eliminating lines and wrinkles that can be aging.

Lines Around the Mouth and Nose Area

If you have visible lines that extend from the bottom outer edges of the nose to the lips (aka marionette lines), a proven solution is to have injections of dermal fillers such as Juvederm®. If considering dermal fillers, be sure to insist on the expertise of an experienced facial cosmetic surgeon such as Dr. Robert J. Smyth, versus an inexperienced esthetician or assistant.

Hollowed-Out Cheeks

Losing facial fat in the cheek area is part of the natural aging process. Injections of dermal fillers such as Voluma®, developed specifically to fill the cheek area, can return your cheeks to the naturally fuller look of your younger years. Again, insist on an experienced cosmetic surgeon who specializes in just the face and neck area, such as Dr. Robert. J. Smyth.

What’s your anti-aging plan?

What people are having done in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s

Anti Aging PlanEver thought about having an “anti-aging plan”?

A personal anti-aging plan in terms of facial cosmetic procedures is increasingly being practiced by both women and men. Whether a regimen of non-surgical treatments beginning in their 30s and 40s, or surgical treatments in their 50s and beyond, people aren’t just thinking about facial cosmetic procedures; they’re getting the work done.

It’s no surprise considering today’s minimally-invasive surgeries that are quicker to heal than ever before, and the non-surgical treatments that can be done as just another errand in your day.

Whatever your age, facial cosmetic procedures have become far more the norm than you might imagine. Here are the procedures most often performed by age…

In your 30s

Botox

Softens fine lines starting to form around the eyes and erases frown lines between the brows (“11s”).

In your 40s

Botox
Dermal Fillers

In addition to Botox injections for smoothing wrinkles, dermal fillers such as Juvederm®, Restylane® and Voluma® are used to fill and smooth droopy areas, such as the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and undereye area.

Upper and/or Lower Eyelid Lifts

This is the age when whether due to genetics, sun damage or both, loose skin forms on the upper lids and sags/bags can appear in the undereye area.

In your 50s, 60s and 70s

Botox
Dermal Fillers
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Upper and/or Lower Eyelid Lifts
Minimally Invasive Facelift (Timeless Lift™)

When gravity wins and we find ourselves with loose, sagging skin in our face and neck area, only a surgical procedure such as the remarkable Timeless Lift™ (the minimally-invasive lower face and neck lift that has turned back the clock for hundreds of thousands of consumers) can remove the extra skin to provide the smooth face and neck area and more youthful, defined jawline for the natural, refreshed look most people want.

Thinking about having a facelift?

Ask yourself this one question….

Facial Cosmetic RejuvenationIf you’re thinking about having a facelift, and going back and forth in your mind about whether or not you should proceed, ask yourself this one question…

“What if?”

Not in a negative or self-doubting manner. In other words, don’t focus on asking “What if people know I had something done?”… or “What if my friends or family criticize my decision?”

Instead, ask yourself…

  • What if I feel great again how about how I look?
  • What if I regain the confidence to be more active socially, to advance my career, to return to the workforce, etc.?
  • What if my kids and grandkids are happy for me and prouder than ever?
  • What if I look in the mirror and once again love what I see?
  • What if I feel alive again, re-energized and loving this stage of my life?

As one of our patients so beautifully stated, “It’s your life. You deserve to feel your best and look your best.”

We couldn’t agree more. Let’s talk.

Dr. Robert J. Smyth in Cincinnati OH has performed more than 3,000 minimally-invasive facelifts and thousands of other surgical and non-surgical, anti-aging, facial cosmetic procedures, including upper eyelifts, lower eyelid lifts, brow lifts, submental liposuction, chin implants, injectables (dermal fillers) and Botox. Having Facial Cosmetic Surgery

Which of these 6 reasons are holding you back?

“I don’t know why I waited so long. Now that I’ve had a facelift, I wish I’d done it a lot sooner.”

We hear this comment often. The idea of undergoing surgery is scary, especially when it’s your face. That is, until you’ve had it done and see the difference it can make. Until then, it’s perfectly normal to let every reason in the world stop you from proceeding.

Oftentimes, the real reasons behind your procrastinating have less to do with the idea of surgery and more to do with what someone else might say about your decision, how you might be judged, or the criticism you might receive for doing something for yourself. In these situations, you’re letting others control your life, your happiness and your future.

When it comes to self-improvement, what matters to you is what’s important.

If any of the following reasons are holding you back from having a facelift, eyelid lift, browlift or other facial cosmetic procedure, at least allow yourself to visit a facial cosmetic surgeon to see what they would recommend you do to look your very best.

Dr. Robert J. Smyth MD, facial cosmetic surgeon in Cincinnati OH specializing in just the face and neck for 30+ years, is delighted to provide patients a complimentary one-on-one consultation. No pressure –– just the answers to your questions and an honest look at what procedures are proven, longer lasting and appropriate for you.

Which of these 6 reasons are holding you back?

  1. What if people know I had something done? The goal for Dr. Smyth is always to provide you the natural, “younger you” look that has people wondering why you look so good –– never the overdone Hollywood-style facial cosmetic surgery that can be shocking. Per Dr. Smyth, “a great result is one where you look like you –– only better”.
  2. My friends will be critical. If someone is truly your friend, they will be supportive. If they are quick to criticize, it may be that they are envious and wish they had the desire and follow-through that you do to look their best.
  3. I can’t take the time to have a facial cosmetic procedure. Can you take 10 days to two weeks out of your life for a proven procedure that can turn back the clock 10 years? That’s the typical recovery time for the Timeless Lift®, the proven, minimally-invasive lower face and neck lift that lasts seven to 10 years on average, after which it can be repeated, if desired.
  4. I shouldn’t spend money like that on myself. If the Timeless Lift lasts you 10 years (at the affordable fee Dr. Smyth charges), it will have cost you less than $2.00 a day. Consider other ways you spend $2 each day and compare the return on your investment.
  5. Aging is part of life – who am I to think I need to look younger. Some people are absolutely fine with the sagging skin, wrinkles and droopy eyes that are part of the natural aging process. Others aren’t. There is no right or wrong answer. But if indeed your aging face is bothering you or affecting your happiness and self-confidence, then by all means that’s reason enough to explore options for looking your best.
  6. I’m afraid to have surgery. Understandable. That’s why we say that “experience matters, especially when it’s your face”. Dr. Robert J. Smyth has performed more than 3,000 minimally-invasive lower facelifts/neck lifts. His entire medical career has been dedicated to strictly the face and neck area. He has seen and treated most every type of facial cosmetic concern and knows how the face needs to look from both an aesthetic and functional perspective for the natural results you want.

Also, Dr. Smyth uses strictly local anesthesia on his patients, along with a slight amount of relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable throughout the procedure and are spared the longer recovery and risks associated with general anesthesia.

Lower Facelift – Before and After Photos

A picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

Patients always wonder what they’ll look like after having a minimally-invasive lower facelift. Will I still look like me? Will anyone know I had anything done? Will the incision lines show? Will the excess skin under my chin be gone and my neck smoother?

“These are all normal and fair questions to ask,” says Dr. Robert Smyth, cosmetic surgeon in Cincinnati, OH, and specialist in just the face and neck area for 30+ years. “The only result I personally consider acceptable is a natural look that has friends and family wondering why you look so refreshed and young for your age –– not asking if you had ’something done’.”

“Pre-procedure, I can use a mirror to show the patient a close approximation of what their post-facelift results will be, but nothing compares to the patient seeing their own before and after photos, even at a week or two post-procedure when the healing process is still underway. They are usually both delighted and happily surprised with the difference.”

Protecting patient privacy
Before and after photos of patients can be rare to come by, because most people prefer not to share their having facial cosmetic surgery performed. You can trust Dr. Smyth takes patient privacy seriously. The photos we share here and those posted on our website at www.timelessyoumd.com have the consent of the patients. Say Goodbye to Your Double Chin

Steps to take to improve your jawline and profile.

Say Goodbye to Double ChinPeople from their 20s to their 80s complain about having a double chin. Extra fat (submental fat) and fullness in the chin area can make you look older than your years. It also can make it difficult for women to wear certain necklines and uncomfortable for men to wear dress shirts and ties.

The good news is that you don’t need to fret about a double chin for a lifetime. You can take next steps now to start feeling better about yourself.

Determine the Cause

The first step to reducing a double chin is to determine what’s causing it. This is where your consultation with a facial cosmetic specialist will begin. Is it heredity –– does a double chin run in the family? Are you overweight –– by even 10 to 20 pounds? Are you getting to an age when you’re starting to see laxity in the skin of your lower face and neck area? Your answer may be one or a combination of these potential causes.

Consider Your Options for Treatment

Submental Liposuction
Submental liposuction is a quick and minimally invasive surgical procedure in which Dr. Robert J. Smyth, face and neck rejuvenation surgeon and specialist in Cincinnati, OH, makes a small incision discretely hidden under the chin where no one can see it. He then uses a tiny canula to remove the excess fat from that area.

Why Patients Choose This Option:

  • This simple procedure is performed under strictly local anesthesia and takes only about 30 minutes. You will feel no pain and avoid the risks and recovery associated with general anesthesia.
  • Post-procedure, you will leave with a small bandage over the tiny incision and will be asked to wear a bandage wrap that goes under their chin and up over the top of your head for just the first 24 hours post-op.
  • You may experience a bit of bruising after your procedure, but most patients go back to work and resume activities within two days post-procedure.
  • You’ll see immediate results that last six to 10 years, provided you maintain a fairly steady weight over that period of time.

Kybella®
KYBELLA® is an injectable, prescription medicine (deoxycholic acid) used to improve the appearance and profile of extra fat below the chin. Kybella is not a permanent solution. Several treatments are generally needed to attain desired results, and treatments may need to be repeated every couple of years.

Why Patients Choose This Option:

  • No incision but less predictability as to results compared to submental liposuction. Check out the before and after photos of actual Kybella patients on the KYBELLA website. You will see a range of results in terms of how much fullness is actually eliminated.
  • A newer and popular option but, typically speaking, younger patients whose skin is still resilient will have better results with KYBELLA than older patients whose skin is showing signs of laxity.

CoolSculpting®
CoolSculpting is fat-freezing technology that uses a machine to suction and reduce fat from under the chin. CoolSculpting results can take weeks to months to appear, and most patients require more than one treatment.

Why Patients Choose This Option:

  • No incision, but less predictability as to results compared to submental liposuction.
  • A newer option, but it can be far more expensive in the long run than submental liposuction. CoolSculpting may need to be repeated every few years, depending upon the fullness under your chin, your overall health, weight, etc. (Think cost per treatment multiplied by the number of treatments needed.)

Take the Final Step to Getting Rid of Your Double Chin

For a quick and long-lasting return on your investment, submental liposuction may be your best choice. However, if you hate the thought of undergoing even the most minor of procedures, you may want to consider KYBELLA injections or CoolSculpting treatments.

Whatever your decision, be sure to visit several facial cosmetic rejuvenation surgeons, ask questions, and determine your overall total cost before making a choice.

Recovery Time After A Facelift

What to expect and what you can do to speed up your “time off”.

Facelift Recovery Cincinnati, OHIf you’re putting off having a facelift because you don’t know how long recovery will take and you’re concerned about missing work or social commitments, you’re not alone. Many people postpone having facial cosmetic procedures due to the unknowns.

You can make time for facial rejuvenation. What you need is the information to plan ahead, including what to expect and your role in making your recovery as quick as possible.

To help in your planning, here are some guidelines from Dr. Robert J. Smyth MD, facial plastic surgeon located in Cincinnati OH, with 30+ years of specializing in just the face and neck area.

Recovery Time After a Facelift

Today’s minimally-invasive facelift, such as the highly-popular Timeless Lift® of which Dr. Smyth has performed more than 3,000, is done with the patient having local anesthesia only, along with some light relaxation medication. Patients are kept entirely comfortable during the procedure, and they avoid the risks and longer recovery associated with general anesthesia.

The sutures, which are artfully placed in a skinny incision line immediately in front of and behind the ears, are removed eight days post-procedure. During that first week, most women can pull down a few pieces of hair in front of their ears to somewhat hide the incision line. Most men and women with very short hair will not be able to hide the incision line during this period.

Once sutures are removed, the incision line is pink for the first week or so, gradually fading each day and becoming easier to hide with one’s hair. At three weeks post-procedure, patients (women and men) can gently pat a bit of base makeup/concealer over the incision line, if desired, to hide it as the healing continues. Most incisions are fully healed on the surface at 4-6 weeks post-procedure.

Patients may have some slight bruising and/or swelling post-procedure, both of which fade quickly.

Your Role in Speeding Up Your Recovery

Avoid Taking Aspirin or Aspirin-Related Products 2 Weeks Pre-op and 1-Week Post-Op
These products will thin your blood which can lead to more bruising and a slower recovery. Products include aspirin, acetaminophens (Advil, Aleve, etc.), as well as some vitamins, herbs and other natural products. Dr. Smyth gives his patients a lengthy list of such products to avoid pre-procedure.

Take Arnica as Directed Pre-Procedure
This age-old herbal supplement has inherent qualities to minimize bruising and reduce inflammation.

Closely Follow Post-Procedure Instructions
Read and follow the post-op instructions your plastic surgeon will provide, including what products to use for some simple cleansing and lubricating of the incision lines. Adhere to your doctor’s advice and directions, not that of well-meaning friends. Do not deter from the surgeon’s directions without first checking with his or her office to get consent. If you feel you’re having a reaction to the recommended cleanser or ointment, call the doctor’s office immediately and they can suggest an alternative.

Sleep at a 30- to 45-Degree Angle for At Least Two Weeks Post-Procedure
While some patients put a foam wedge behind their pillow, you can stack up a few pillows to prop yourself up to a 30- to 45-degree angle.

Don’t Sleep on Your Stomach Post-Procedure
Stomach sleepers don’t like to hear this, but unless you want to undo the results of your facelift, sleep on your back ideally or on your side gently (not with your hand or arm buried in your cheek) forever more after your facelift procedure.

Take It Easy
You don’t have to stay in bed or just sit in a chair after your procedure, but your face and neck need time to heal. Wait at least two weeks before undertaking any heavy lifting (anything over 15 lbs., including grandkids) or engaging in any sweat-inducing work or exercise (running, jogging, fast dancing, aerobics). Also, avoid a lot of bending over with your head down.

Wear Sunscreen, Eat A Healthy Diet, and Do Not Smoke
These three lifelong tips cannot be stressed enough. A facelift sets back the clock a good 10 years or more, but the aging process always continues. Now that you’ve taken steps to refresh your face and look and feel younger, protect your investment by taking care of your skin and health overall.
