How to plan for your “new you”

3 Days Pre-Procedure

Time to Get Ready

Facelift Recovery CalendarReview your patient packet of pre-procedure information.
Have your list of “Items on Hand” and Rx’s ready.
Begin taking Arnica 3x/daily (Arnica pellets help reduce any bruising or swelling.)

Day of Surgery

Be at the Surgery Center 1 hr. prior to procedure.
Take antibiotics, Arnica and relaxation medicine as directed.
Post-op, ICE over dressing/wrap for 20 mins. of every hour you are awake.
Sleep with head elevated 30-45 degrees.
Eat soft foods. No vigorous chewing.
No heavy lifting (20+ lbs), sweat-inducing exercise or quick turns of head/neck (i.e., golf/tennis) for 4 weeks.

Day 2

Come in for 24-hr. follow-up appt.

You can drive yourself, if desired.
Dr. Smyth will change your dressing/wrap.
Keep new/smaller wrap in place for next 24 hrs.
Continue to sleep with head elevated 30-45 degrees.
Eat your normal diet, but NO vigorous chewing.

Days 3 – 4

Take It Easy

You may shower and gently wash your hair with baby shampoo.
Continue to wear a wrap during the day (at home) and at bedtime (soft, very stretchy headbands also work).
Clean incisions with ½ strength Peroxide and apply Bacitracin ointment 2-3x today.
Still no heavy lifting, sweat-inducing exercise or sports.
Any bruising or swelling will be diminishing.
Continue to sleep with head elevated 30-45 degrees.
Eat your normal diet, but NO vigorous chewing.

Days 5 – 8

Return to Mild Activities

Continue to wear a wrap during the day (at home) and at bedtime.
Bruising or swelling will continue to lessen.
Discontinue cleaning incisions with Peroxide and begin to cleanse with Cetaphil.
Discontinue using Bacitracin and begin using Aquaphor ointment on incisions.
Continue to use warm compresses 3-5 times per day.
Continue to sleep with head elevated 30-45 degrees.
Eat your normal diet, but NO vigorous chewing.
Still no heavy lifting, sweat-inducing exercise or sports.

Day 8

Come in for Suture Removal

Takes about 20 mins. No discomfort.
Dr. Smyth will remove your sutures and provide you with further care instructions.
Still no heavy lifting, sweat-inducing exercise or sports.

Days 9 -10

Return to Work/Moderate Activities

Still no heavy lifting or hard exercise/sports for another 2-1/2 weeks.
Most women can pull down a few strands of hair in front of their ears to hide the pink incision line that will fade away in coming weeks.
Eat your normal diet but refrain from over-stretching your mouth (i.e., no large sandwiches).
Do not apply makeup on the incision lines until 3 weeks post-procedure (allow incisions to fully heal).
When applying makeup to the face, be gentle –– no tugging or pulling.
Be gentle when washing your hair. Gently towel dry/no wringing or tugging.

NOTE: Wait 4-6 weeks post-procedure to have hair dyed or chemically-treated.
