Getting Rid of A Double Chin –– Part Two
In a recent article, we looked at the pros and cons of having minimally invasive submental liposuction to get rid of a double chin versus investing in a non-surgical treatment called CoolSculpting. Now, let’s look at another non-surgical treatment that has become available for reducing fat under the chin, called Kybella.
KYBELLA® is an injectable, prescription medicine (deoxycholic acid) used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat). Look at the before and after photos of actual Kybella patients on the KYBELLAS website and you can see a reduction in fullness under their chin, with some patients receiving better results than others. KYBELLA is not unlike Coolsculpting or submental liposuction in that it may meet the expectations of some patients while disappointing others. The question becomes… how are you to know which procedure will provide you the best results and return on your investment?
Here are “3 Key Points to Consider” when exploring your options…
1. Your Age.
KYBELLA and CoolSculpting may be best suited to younger adult patients who have fullness under the chin but not sagging skin along with it. While these two non-surgical treatments may reduce or freeze away fat cells, they do not remove the sagging skin left behind. By the age of 50, most people have enough laxity (looseness) in the skin of their chin/neck that submental liposuction, alone or as part of a lower facelift, is the best solution for eliminating their double chin and leaving them with the smooth neck and more defined jawline they desire.
2. How Quickly Do You Want To See Results?
With Submental Liposuction, results are immediate and will last six to 10 years depending on your faithful use of sunscreen, not smoking, maintaining a healthy diet, and avoiding major fluctuations in weight. KYBELLA may require up to six treatments spaced at least one month apart to attain the results many patients want. CoolSculpting may require several treatments spaced over a number of months and may need to be repeated within two to three years.
3. Your Total Cost
Costs will vary, so do your homework and consider both the initial and follow-up treatments to figure your total cost. For example, using Dr. Smyth’s fees for the submental liposuction procedure; if your results last 10 years, your cost is less than 33 cents per day. Compare that cost to the multiple treatments typically needed for CoolSculpting or KYBELLA.
As always, no procedure is right for everyone. Take the time to visit one or more, experienced, board-certified face and neck cosmetic surgeons/specialists for a personal consultation. Ask them which procedure they feel is best for you, why they recommend it, what you can expect in terms of results and, of course, have them confirm your projected total investment.
